2007 Desktop Linux Survey Results Revealed

Some interesting data on the dektop usage of Linux. What’s striking is that popularity of openSUSE almost doubled form roughly 10% in 2006 to close to 20% in 2007 survey.
Congratulations to a job well done!
openSUSE seems to becoming more and more popular, at an accelerating pace in recent months. And deservedly so! The stuff their fine developers do put out (like the Build Service) is an invaluable contribution to the general community. And it pays (despite of the pains one may suffer from some past decisions of the upper echolons of their Novell management types…)

"midterm votes" : 13.000 (3rd day)
"final votes" : 8.500 (4th and 5th day)

How true.
And this even shows up unrefuteably in the DesktopLinux survey figures. I did take a few snapshots while the survey was still running. I’ll give you only approximate figures:

If you analyze these figures, it means this about the participation of Linux users:
"initial votes" : 17.000 (1st and 2nd day)
"midterm votes" : 13.000 (3rd day)
"final votes" : 8.500 (4th and 5th day)
And it means this about the advance of openSUSE during the survey days alone:
17000 * 9% = 1.530 openSUSE votes during first 2 days:
–> 1.530 votes ==> 9% of initial 17.000 votes
30000 * 17% = 5.100 openSUSE votes during third day:
–> 3.570 votes ==> 27% of midterm 13.000 votes
38500 * 21% = 8.085 openSUSE votes during last 2 days:
–> 2.985 votes ==> 35% of final 8.500 votes
Indeed, this survey shows that openSUSE is going from strength to strength…

Ubuntu is there now but not for long. openSUSE is coming!!
This is something of a surprise to me, given the response to the Novell/M$ deal. Activity on suseforums.net and the usenet even seemed to decline at the time. Maybe that was just a misperception on my part. Could the agreement actually be drawing more new users than it’s turning away?
