openSUSE 10.3 Beta 3 Has Been Released

The openSUSE Team is proud to announce the release of openSUSE 10.3 Beta 3. Though this release should not be used on any production machines, everyone can help shape this release by testing out installations and much more. For more information on the release schedule, take a look at the Roadmap.
Technical Changes

Media and Download
openSUSE 10.3 Beta 3 for i386, x86-64 and ppc comes as different media sets, all of which can be downloaded from http://software.opensuse.org/developer:
- 1 DVD containing OSS and NonOSS software (torrents for: i386, x86_64, ppc)
- 1 CD with a default KDE installation (i386, x86_64, not for ppc)
- 1 CD with a default GNOME installation (i386, x86_64, not for ppc)
- 1 AddOn CD with only NonOSS packages on it (i386 or x86_64, ppc)
- 1 AddOn CD with language packages that are used for extra languages (the DVD contains support for Chinese (Simpl. & Trad.), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish; the DVD has support for installation in all languages, just extra packages are only on this extra media) (i386, x86_64, ppc)

Is there a complete package list anywhere?
Like you would get with looking into the Factory tree http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/suse/ ?
Ok I installed the Beta on Virtual Box 1.5 …
The installation was ok, no errors…
but when the system Starts, there is a kernel panic which says that the cpu is too old.
Any suggestions?

That’s already known as bug #307676. You have to install the normal kernel package.

Will JAVA 1.6 not be included in openSUSE 10.3 ???
I am installing the Beta3 right now on vmware player, and there are only packages for 1.5…
Please build packages for java 1.6… there are many java developers out there using suse linux…
I know that there is a testing repositry for java 1.6 packages, but they are not up to date…

hello, i want to to try suse 10.3 but plz let me know if it has that option of beryl 3d desktop coz installing things on linux is a great mess.. why cant there be simple installable files like exe in windows..
plz make something simple.. im fed up of giving up commands in linux… i like open suse.but the way things gets installed,, its too hectic
The way things install in openuse are hectic. You have got to be kidding me. Installing, at least in my experience is as simply as selecting it from Yast, then letting Yast download and install it. How hectic and complicated is that? heck of a lot simpler than windows, where you have to go to the site, find the file, download it, and often turn the antivirus off to get it to install correctly.
Is there one has been in trouble installing Oss 10.3 b3 ? Everything went find until first boot, then Xorg failed: no core pointer…
Xorg seems not configured at all anyway, I had to copy an xorg.conf from an other linux installation ( nvidia fully worked out of the box ( pclinuxos ) btw…)
I rebooted and managed to enter X with pclinuxos configs … still no mouse!!! SaX2 with no mouse : it is a funny game guessing when and how to hit the proper
GUI elements!!! really funny. managed to get into the Mouse config page … have to play the same game to get into a std usb imps2 mouse choice… ( the one detected was half way done “Logitech USB – ” ??? ) ( Actually my USB mouse is Logitech Wireless LX7 … ) er… Beta1 was a complete success … why is it failing as the release is pointing into 3 weeks ???

Also with beta 3 i can NOT use its WirelessLan Card Broadcom 43xx…..

Basically, they are serious about supporting Linux distro and they are wondering which one to choose thus there is a poll. I think it would be nice if openSUSE enthusiasts could vote there.

I compiled succesfully NVIDIA drivers.
(I’v installed kernel-source & gcc)
I’ve did again but with no success.
There is a problem with the chip of the nvidia 6200 GForce card.
Compile is going oke, but sax2 reports problems, can also not find 3D options off the card.
I added the KDE backports repository to my update list month ago. Now it seems that KDE on my 10.2 system is newer (3.5.7-88.2) than the version in 10.3 Beta 3. There were so many dependency problems that I could not solve them during the update process. Finally I had to abort.
It’s not newer, don’t let the build revision number confuse you.
You’ve probably mixed the versionnumber of the kdebase-packages with the KDE-versionnumber. Please look at the kdelibs-versionnumber; it’s the versionnumber you see when you open any kde-application and look under Help, About KDE. Yours should be 3.5.7 release 74.2 if you have the latest kde-packages.
Please keep in mind that the packages coming with the distro are not always the latest. A new distro-release should be a consistent, stable pack of packages, and therefore it could very well be, that the packages on your 10.2 are more recent than those announced on 10.3
Still, notice that you are running one of the most beautiful operating systems and software available.
OK, I tried again to solve the dependency problems. Deleting some packages (for example: kdegraphics3) helped a lot and now Beta3 is installed and works perfectly. Installed kdegraphics later. Now comes NVIDIA…
I use SuSE since 6.4 and I really like it.

OppenOffice and Konsole can’t input chinese.
This release have implemented the kernel module for ca0106 (creative SoundBlaster 24!Bit)?On openSuse has not been working!

The package installed Kooka which crashes. Xsane0.994 is available in the downloaded DVD as an rpm. That works well with the installed sane-backends EXCEPT at default resolution!
I needed to install the beta version of vlc; the regular version crashed.
10.3beta’s repository is not normal – frequently received “media error”.
gcc apparently is not automatically installed. What has been installed is a binary version and regular .tar.gz source codes cannot compile. Apparently the gcc material is available on the DVD, but the dependencies are too numerous to sort out in a hurry.
With Compaq desktop EVO 2,4 ghz, I just had to select the “safe mode” installation. Otherwise my PATA (IDE) 250 Go WD is not recognized at all.
Same issue with Opensuse 10.2 . Updates are much well managed in 10.3 and I really appreciated. But I didn’t see any option for a new beta KDE during install

Nothing seem to work any more….
I install the default kernel to, and set it to default, and now i have a working openSUSE 10.3 (i586) again.
Don’t update the default kernel to 2.6.22.5-21, this will gave you a kernel panic to !!!!

Hello,
I’m trying to get an XEN guest running by using the Yast feature.
After filling out the forms in “Creating a Virtual Machine” the
VM is starting (boot messages are visible, no errors. VM is visible in
the Virtual Machine Manager) and after a while the text based installation
program is starting. Then I’m getting “No kernel found”.
Maybe I’ve forgotten some detail, I’m not working on that computer right now.
The installation source is an opensuse 10.3 beta3 DVD on phy:/dev/dvd
the disk to be the home of the VM is a 5G (LVM based) partition.
I’ve tried the whole procedure with different computers – results are the same.
Any hints?

Additionaly, I tried “the old way” and tried to install first in a directory.
(
That failed also and the error msg this time was: “Disk space tool low”.
I had marked a bare minimum of packets for installation (rough guess 500-700MB)
and the yastinstaller shows 70GB (!!) marked for installation. Really funny…
Not so funny I think is the possibilty that we might see this as
the golden code at Oct. 4th

Does anyone else have problems with the Nvidia 6200 agp card? It works perfectly on debian and opensuse 10.2, but it crashes X everytime i try to run WoW on 10.3

I’ve also a system with an Nvidia 6200 agp card. I’m encountering black screen errors when surfing the web with firefox. When I switch back to the open source NV driver (sax2 -r -m 0=nv) the problem is fixed. I’ve no other solution so far.

OMG i cant get java on my opensuse 10.3 here is link of wht comes up it is very confusing as all i want is java to play enjoyable games when i am bored im very frustrated help please

Don’t try to open an application binary in an text editor, save it to the hard drive and run it!
I for one will not be using SuSE again. I have used SuSE since 1999 and it seems to get worse with each release. A few years ago it was rock-solid and the best around; now it’s not even usable for me. The final straw was to find that gcc was not distributed on the basic media — Meaning I cannot get internet access from SuSE since I need to re-compile my modem driver. It looks like the openSuSE tema have lost the plot completely. What a weird decision. I am posting this from KUbuntu with which I will stick.
Space is limited on the 1-CD media. You seriously think it’s a good idea to include *developer* compiling tools on that media? All average users should not need to use it. Those wishing to compile can certainly work out how to go to yast -> software -> software management to get it. If you want a selection of more packages on the media you should be using the DVD installer anyway.
If you think this is an indication of “having lost the plot” then you probably need to re-evaluate what you’re even saying. It was a conscious decision to not have GCC and other compiler tools on there, it’s substantiated and reason-based. If you could get out of your single use-case for a single second you would probably see that too. Good luck.
Hey, guess what? It’s NOT just a single use-case issue – I’m a new user who now apparently WON’T be, because my wireless card also requires compilation of the driver. If I want to start physically relocating equipment and using a lot of additional moving parts to make this work, I’m sure that I could – but really, why should I go through all the trouble?
