I donwloaded the Edu DVD (Beta version) and tried to add it to SUSE 11.0 (using the Addon feature) but I got an error during the installation, right now I am not on site so I can not specify what the error was. Has anyone successfully installed the the Edu DVD (Beta) on Suse 11?

Thanks

Lars,
As the guy who spent all that time trying to get people to listen, it is clear from your remarks about the add-on process that I did my job. You clearly need little guidance from me any longer.
I have some things to show you I just can't yet.
;)

Hi Lutz!

If you like, you're very welcome to help us with translation!

Just ping me in IRC on #opensuse-edu or tell us on opensuse-edu@opensuse.org what you want to translate. We tried to keep the translation as simple as possible; so - for example - if you like to translate our patterns, you just have to translate three text files for each pattern...

> there are no *real* add-on products for openSUSE

Each openSUSE release since 10.1 comes at least with one Add-on product: the language add-on.

But you're right, as you can also use the normal Repository module to add the openSUSE-Education Repository.

We just want to guide all users (the ones using the ISO images and the ones using the online repository) with only one instruction. And as you add the ISO (resp. the burned DVD) as Add-on media, users using the Online-Repository are guided to use the same way (just to avoid confusion).

Sidenote: With 11.0 you can add the Education Repository via the community repositories "module" in YaST, too.

> Add-on products are great if you want to modify an installation workflow (during installation or upgrade)

And that's what we're doing with the Education add-on: the patterns are selected automatically for installation if you use the add-on way. Try it out: download and burn 10.3 DVD and the Edu-DVD, install openSUSE and add the Edu-DVD as Add-on: you'll get the Education-Desktop pattern and all packages selected automatically. Same if you burn the ISO and insert the DVD into an installed system. It even works if you add the Online-Repository in an installed system using the add-on module.

...and in the next step we already have to modify the installation workflow as the root-partition is really full (~7 GB) if you install the Education Add-on. So we have to modify the partitioner proposal to get a bigger root-Partition.

...and as the next release hopefully contains a few "special" YaST modules, especially jdsn's Education module ( http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Modules/Education ), we need to adapt the installation workflow for at least the next releases...

So for me using the Add-on module is our prefered way to "install" openSUSE-Education. But as openSUSE allows different ways to get additional software, openSUSE-Education luckily supports it all. ;-)

Are you sure users should >>use the YaST2 “Add-On Product” module to add our Online-Repository<<? Because I've suggested dropping the *Add-On Product* icon from YaST Control Center on opensuse-factory recently - there are no *real* add-on products for openSUSE or am I wrong? Just additional repositories. Even at this page http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Repositories, *YaST Repositories* module is used.

Add-on products are great if you want to modify an installation workflow (during installation or upgrade) or define a post-installation workflow on a running system. Otherwise use just YaST Repositories module :)
