After thoughts...

The package management and repository system in this distribution is awesome. Although, it's an infant technology, it will enable companies to create their own repositories and the operating system will do all the updating for them. Nice!

Mark Shuttleworth recently said that there needs to be more ways of monetizing Linux. And while I'm not an Ubuntu follower, obviously, he's still very respectable and a gift to the Linux world. This got me to thinking. My previous supposition was that Linux (or OpenSource) could thrive through strategic partnerships between companies that need some control over operating system development to ensure the survival of their products. This is, of course, what certain companies are doing. And it's a smart strategy if those companies don't suffer from slow development only to leave a legacy that survives them and flourishes. To add to this business model, instead of monetizing on subscriptions (old) or training (common), why not include it in the proprietary software price? Suppose 90% of the price is for the software and 10% covers the cost of codeveloping Linux - the Linux tax.

And there's the important word: Codevelop.

Why does it have to be called OpenSource? Isn't it truly codeveloped? Just thoughts...
