People arguing that ubuntu is not one of the major linux kernel contributors or xorg contributors should also consider a couple of really important elements:
in its history, ubuntu is the latest born distro. I bought my first SuSE linux 86.4) in year 2000, Slackware, ubuntu is born in 2004!
That said, ubuntu mostly contributes in areas particularly important for a desktop consumer oriented distribution while RedHat or Novell are mostly interested in the Enterprise sector.
SuSE and OpenSuSE are really good distributions out there, i often recommend them. At the same time I have to agree on the point that before Ubuntu was born there was not so much attention to the newbie. I remember my frustration with suse Linux 9.0, whan I was completely unable to connect my PC because in the driver for my TIACX100 based wireless card was not included. The same year I installed for the first time Ubuntu Warty and every worked like magic. Ubuntu philosophy towards the users (ubuntu should "just work") has imho influenced other distributor. So, after all, I think we owe Ubuntu at least a bit of respect. It could be not the best distro for everyone but that's not an issue of GNU/Linux operating systems: we can choose between distributions and competition is good, at the end, for users. So I hope fights between distributions will remain fair knowing we are all on the same boat. We can strive to create the "best" linux distro, but we should avoid any kind of attack who creates disappointment in our friend competitors. We're all brothers at the end, so stop warflaming about this.

Actually, that was always the philosophy of Ubuntu - to incorporate currently existing technologies and make it easy to use. One of the reasons why I like Novell is because they are more of a pioneer in the Linux community. The company is also an example of what can happen when a monopoly like Microsoft becomes too large. But now that Microsoft is a convicted monopolist by the U.S. government and the E.U., and were sentenced to ‘Linux community’ service, most rational Linux users would likely view Microsoft’s current role in partnering with Linux organizations and laugh. openSUSE 11.1 will be a big release. Looking forward to it.

Actually Slack and Red Hat are more of the pioneer of linux. That is when Linus was most involved with the kernel. Another one back then was stormix, which basically follwed mandrake. Then of course FreeBSD , BSD LITE, and Solaris was big back then as well, including Hp-Aux.

I'm writing this from OpenSUSE 11.1 Beta1 running in VirtualBox and can honestly say that i'm loving it!
Yeah, KDE4 is the future. Specially because it lacks the Mac menubar, it´s "built-in archiver" is actually a clone of file-roller that only does list view and both it´s panel and desktop are crappy and uncustomizable, in general it´s taken the GNOME "zero options" policy even further beyond what the gnome guys themselves did.
Oops I forgot. This is the M$ linux forum, kinda expected to always believe that whatever M$ defines as good MUST BE good and whatever M$ says is ungood MUST BE ungood.

Typical suse attitude.
No, betas are meant for people to report bugs.
Bug reporter is your friend. Forget the anger of frustrated user, and look at the bug instead.
If you don't like the bugs and can't handle people, then just keep releasing broken products.
Suse 11 can't print, but can spin boxes.
