Want classic KDE on openSUSE, without the full DVD download? Carlos Goncalves has you covered. openSUSE 11.1 Live CDs and USB images featuring KDE 3.5 are now available for download.
Created by openSUSE community member Carlos Goncalves, the KDE 3.5 Live CD and USB images contain openSUSE 11.1 plus several key updates.
In addition to KDE 3.5, the Live CD offers OpenOffice.org 3.0, Smolt, Amarok 1.4.10, KDEPIM3, Firefox 3.0.4, K3b, and many other useful applications. You can see the entire package list here: package-lists-openSUSE
And, of course, openSUSE has the current KDE releases covered as well. You can download the official openSUSE 11.1 KDE4 Live CDs based on KDE 4.1.3, or if you want to follow KDE development, Stephan Binner has created a KDE Four Live CD featuring KDE 4.2 Beta 2.
Note that the KDE 3.5 live CD is an “unofficial” release. Even though it’s not a formal release, we’re excited by the work Carlos has put into supporting KDE 3.5 and showing what can be done with the build service. Did bluetooth get fixed in this image?
It’s as in official openSUSE 11.1+updates since the packages are from there directly. So I bet it’s not (or did I some black magic and fixed it?! ;-) )

I’d also like to see a LiveCD with with KDE 4.2 when it comes out, based on openSUSE 11.1 with latest updates. No problem if it is unofficial. Or maybe Carlos can provide some instructions on how to do it?

Beineri provided KDE four live featuring latest KDE development. If you wish to make unofficial LivecD by yourself, just follow the URL as mentioned on above post. You could apply the KDE 3.5 tutorial at the above link into KDE 4.2 with ‘small changes’ in base installation source and modify few pattern & package.
It may not identical with what Beineri provided but you will get a nice LiveCD with your selection package.

Is there is BUG in the 64bit USB file?
The extracted file eats over 2,3GB! (openSUSE-11.1-KDE3-LiveUSB-x86_64.raw)
How big is i686 (openSUSE-11.1-KDE3-LiveUSB-i686.raw.gz) image as extracted? Is 1 GB stick enough?

No. With the USB version you can use it as a system installed (have documents, install packages, etc).
Note that this kind of medias aren’t as much tested as CDs/DVDs are so don’t expected 100% bug-free, though any bug found should be reported.

I think KDE 4 will be good further on, but it is not enough at the moment – when you are used to the very complete 3.5 desktop environment.

The new KDE cannot replace 3.5 just yet. There are a few features missing.

Just about ready to ditch SUSE. I hate the new look to messy stuff doesn’t work. What happened to if ain’t broke don’t fix it. At least give us the option SUSE people. How is it more productive to have a menu that slides out here then slide out some more the more I dig looking for what I want. And if I want to go back to classic look I loose the quick start menu? Oh look lets shaft Gnome as well. Arghhhhh are we losing our way here.
This is very nice; I’ve just installed from the unofficial KDE 3.5.10 CD of OpenSUSE 11.1 onto an old Gateway e1400 desktop circa 1999 (Celeron Coppermine 566mhz, 512mb RAM, i810 IGP, still has old Win98 SE product key sticker on the side — it was given to me by a friend who I helped move).
Compared to the official KDE 4.1.3 version of OpenSUSE 11.1, the unofficial KDE 3.5.10 version simply flies! Gone are the stuttering pauses of KDE4 while changing focus between application windows. Switching between apps is much faster; pages load and update much more quickly, and everything feels nimble and smooth. Heck, this is even better than some other “lite” distros on this machine. KDE3 FTW!
Does ‘Extra languages Add-on CD’ work with this unofficial edition?
Having trouble with nvidia drivers, so X doesn’t come up. I tried to run NVIDIA-.sh but it complains about no ‘ld’. The graphics card is a GEForce 8600, anyone point me in the right direction?
