Downtime for download.opensuse.org

March 10th, 2009 by

Peter Poeml has reported that the storage array is down for download.opensuse.org. We don’t have a definite time for it to be up again, but it could be more than one day. We’re working on the problem and will be getting a backup in place shortly.

In the meantime, the openSUSE mirror network is still available. See mirrors.opensuse.org to find a mirror near you.

    zOMG!
And i turned of my firewall, changed ipv6 support to ipv4 and back… logged on and off 100 times… i know why opensuse.org is default homepage after installation…

by the way: thanks for opensuse and thanks 4 kde4.2! i hope 4.3 will enable to set up a wallpaper for each workspace

  2. Thanks for the heads up! Hope you get things back in order soon!

Wouldn’t it be possible to use the “mirror brain” technology to redirect all requests?

    • Interesting concept, used by other distros by providing direct mirror URLs in repo metadata. Strange that it’s not used, or download.opensuse.org was actually a kind of “traffic redirector” (I don’t think it was).

Currently, download.opensuse.org already works with mirrorbrain – so requests are redirected to the closed mirror of the client.

…and the “Zypp-Team” is already working on a fallback solution (first try download.o.o and if that fails, use the latest mirror) – but this is something for 11.2

Before anyone asks, I rated this 5 stars because it was informative. I like to know the problem specifics. Thanks!

Let’s also spread the voice about what Peter asked:

“We are in need of hardware since ever; if anyone would be able to sponsor some, we would be very glad about it.”

There are companies taking advantage of openSUSE-related projects, and I’m not thinking to Novell. It’s time to help! ;-)

    Regards,
    A.

“Its storage array broke down once again, and we have no backup.
(We are in need of hardware since ever; if anyone would be able to
sponsor some, we would be very glad about it.) ”

Since when is Novell begging for money when their hardware brakes down?? This is really pathetic.

Just put an urgent order for a new storage array, your boss (Novell) will pay the bill.

    This is unbelievable…

“opensuse is sponsored by novell, Subtle difference I hope not to subtle for you!”

I didn’t know that, this clarifies a lot. Thank you.

But it does dissapoint me that Novell’s support to OpenSUSE is limited in such a way
that OpenSUSE has to ask for money for a vital component.
I thought OpenSUSE was important to Novell…
