openSUSE 11.1 KDE4 Reloaded with Online Updates and KDE 4.3.1

September 10th, 2009 by

Although openSUSE 11.2 is still two months away updated openSUSE 11.1 KDE4 Reloaded images previewing some changes are available now. They are respins of openSUSE 11.1 including KDE 4.3.1, Firefox 3.5 and all the online updates which have been released for openSUSE 11.1.

These installable Live-CDs are useful for people who want to test out KDE 4.3 and users who are doing new installs and want the most recent openSUSE updates straight out of the box, saving a lot of installation time. New in this version is that the images can be also dumped to a USB stick and booted from there.

See the KDE 4.3 announcement for more information on the improvements and new features in KDE 4.3.

Compared to openSUSE 11.1 KDE4 desktop, the images include the latest KDE4 version of applications like Amarok, Digikam, KNetworkManager and the new Qt4-based YaST Control Center. Some additional applications like Choqok, Kompare, Marble and Okteta could be added thanks to a more efficient compression algorithm.

A Note of Caution

Please note that this is not an “official” openSUSE release, and has not undergone the same kind of testing that stable releases receive.

Can I apply this changes to my existing openSUSE 11.1 installation?

  2. jabellon

Can it be used to “upgrade” and UTD 10.0 install ?
    Thanks.

Does worldwide very popular ZTE MF636+ 3G mobile data modem work easily with this version of openSUSE?
Previously it hasn’t worked withouT extra work, like Huawei 3G modems do.

Is that 11.1 + KDE 4.3.1 -version somehow “better” than most recent 11.2 factory version from here

    http://download.opensuse.org/factory/iso/

So if this version has not either undergone the same kind of testing that stable releases receive and is partial mix of older and new packets and apps.

  5. Well, just great work!, thanks to the creator/team involved in this release.

I have over a Week using it and works flawlessly, fast and stable.

And kde 4.3.1 its just like fresh, clean, sunrise air … I Love It!

    Thanks again! :D

Well done. At the moment I’m downloading KDE 4 Reloaded. (By the way that’s also a cool name.)

I think it’s a pitty, that on the german opensuse.org-site (http://de.opensuse.org) not a hint about that news is. The last news stopped to release at end of july this year.

    Greetings from Germany
    Daniel

P.S.: One more question. I guess it wouldn’t be difficult to update to 11.2 from this KDE 4-Reloaded release, too.

I’m sure that the German wiki team would welcome any help with translations. :-)

Not more easy than an update from stock 11.1 will be.

It may be unwise to assume that an update from stock 11.1 to 11.2 will be easy. With a dual boot machine, both clean instal of 11.1 and an upgrade from 11.0 to 11.1 turned out to be a nightmare, owing to bugs in grub. (see for example Thinkpad won’t boot with 11.1 and weird effects of updating from 11 to 11.1 )

I hope that 11.2 will have resolved these installation/upgrade problems on dual-boot machines, because regrettably we can’t all use Linux-only boxes.

I’ve been running this release for several days now and it is just great. Smooth, fast and predictable. Here’s my latest blog entry:

openSUSE 11.2 milestone 7 has been replaced with a community release called openSUSE 11.1 KDE Reloaded. It uses the latest release of KDE, 4.3.1 and it’s a humdinger!!! Everything just works…sound, flash, Java, music, etc. So far it is very fast, stable and thoroughly updated with all the latest security and maintenance releases. You can’t ask for much more…that is until 11.2 is final. jepsr

Needless to say I’m very glad to get my hands on this latest community effort, excellent work team.
