Having difficulty with the installation of the proprietary ATI driver. After discovering that the "Easy Way" didn't work, I went with the "Hard Way". Running the latest download from ATI gives me the following error:
<code>
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
==================================================
ATI Technologies Linux Driver Installer/Packager
==================================================

Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version
default:v2:i686:lib::none:2.6.33-rc7-3-default; make sure that the version is being
correctly set by --iscurrentdistro

Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install.cDJzU5
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
</code>

This is quite strange to me, as I made sure to update the kernel and sources, then rebooting before running the app.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them.

I second the requests to focus on sound and video because despite having booted to black screen directly after installing 11.2 (which will is gaurenteed to repulse newcomers) i ended reverting to 11.1 due to AUDIO... the audio is so terrible in 11.2, it spikes loudly when i close a window and i have to fear for my ears..It's just not a viable desktop OS without audio... really 11.2 should never have been released because it is essentially beta...

11.1 is far better but has recently had problems which i believe to be due to the latest updates which cause the sound to POP when running on battery power... Not nearly as bad as the sound spikes in 11.2 but disturbing nonetheless.

The absolute worst thing about opensuse is the audio.. Other than that it's a great OS, unfortunately that's one of the most important aspects.

Also, how hard would it be to configure video properly post install like every other distribution?

Please make the next release more stable than 11.2, delay the release if you have to but save what's left of your reputation.

I have been using openSuSE from its 10.1 release. This is a great news to have a new release 11.3 soon after the 11.2. I found openSuSE 11.2 the best release and 2nd best is 11 release (I found 11.1's graphics hardware acceleration little inefficient. Hope 11.3 will meet our expectations as in 11.2.
######################################################################################################################################################################################
I know Gnome is under heavy reconstruction from its low level code. But, we miss the "Login Manager" in gnome which was a part of opensuse distro till 11 release. Hope this would be brought back.
######################################################################################################################################################################################
Hope nautilus will be more consistent and informative with its applets.
######################################################################################################################################################################################
Another thing, if nautilus can have a quick preview pane like windows 7 or somewhat like KDE4 for the commonly used files then it will be rocking! So, some may argue that why not using KDE?!! But with due respect to KDE I feel gnome more elegant, simple and sophisticated front-end for me. The preview file extensions should be like as follows:

Docs: .pdf, .ps, .doc, .rtf, .txt, .odt, .xml, .html, .bin, .c, .cpp, .js, .vhd, .v etc.
Images: .bmp, .jpg, .png, .tiff etc
######################################################################################################################################################################################
Installing audio and video codecs in openSuSE is very easy than any other distros, but the problem lies in the repositories, in which any new comer will be puzzled easily with the jungles of codecs libs. For a beginner it is confusing whether to install xine, gstreamer, vlc, ffmpeg or fluendo and ultimately after several screwed up attempts he or she finnally gets the idea! ;)

As linux movement is open-mind open-source I suggest that:

There should be some codec packs installed and working just out of the box, so that we should not hear the strange statements from some beginners: "I don't believe!! Your linux can play videos and mp3 too!!!!!!!!!"

Repository dependencies of audio/video codecs, applications and various versions (sometimes same thing from different repos) should be more refined so that no software corruption should be there.

Playing DVD-videos and encoding DVD-videos is still now a problem in linux distros along with openSuSE without any work around. Hope these issues should cleared soon.
##################################################################################################################################################################################
Now a days Compiz as well as Desktop Effects have been a magic box of pandora. We love this application. Hope in next releases it will be more efficient with 3D rendering as I found it tearing screen when playing videos of higher fps. In spite of that compiz is the ultimate effects rendering application I recommend to others.
##################################################################################################################################################################################
I wish openSuSE 11.3 a very good luck.
Open minds- open source - think LINUX! :)

ok, a few comments are nog for openSUSE but for the system integrators. Note that comparisions agains windows are flawed as those systems are carefully built by the hardware vendors. Stick an OEM in a laptop and you *will* find that you miss an awful lot of drivers. If you can start it, that is.

Ok, now for milestone 1: I can't get the live nor the std milestone to run under vmware wksta 7.01 BTW

I had the same problem as LXX, a multicoloured rainbow kind of screen with a Geoforce 9500 card, substituted that with a GF 8400 and it worked fine. I was using the KDE CD live install disk. Everything else sofar works great, VirtualBox installed no problem and Window 7 runs much safer in a cage then in the wild.

After reinstalling 11.2, reupdating the system to Milestone 1 and putting kernel-default-2.6.33* into zyppers locklist (zypper al kernel-default-2.6.33*, kernel-desktop-2.6.33* etc..), I managed to get it run smoothly again. It seems that the trouble with the one minute timeout and the broken graphics are solely related to the new kernel series. 2.6.31 with everything else updated to Milestone 1 works flawlessly. Too bad they removed 2.6.32 from the factory repository.

I am eagerly awaiting the final revision of KDE4.4 to make it into the factory repository.

Fortunately I installed 11.3 on a spare disc, because I too have the unuseable coloured screen (GeForce 9400 graphics). I have no idea how to make 11.3 accept 11.2 drivers so will wait for a milestone release I can use.

Perhaps this is not the best time to ask for this, but could OpenSuse provide a service to let people know when the Nvidia and ATI repositories come online for the new release? After a disastrous start with 11.2, I promised myself not to update again until the proprietary drivers are ready.

I do realise that you need testers for the betas RCs and so forth, but for those of us that need stability for our work, even the GM can be a dangerous thing to install until the video drivers are ready.
