With all respect, but I think you're missing my point. The Linux kernel developpers made a wrong choice by adding the Nouveau driver as the default nVidia graphics driver. It doen't support 3D graphics yet, so it is USELESS. From a common desktop market point of view it's not appreciable you've to work around with the proprietary nVNvidia drivers at the moment. It should work out of the box, but it doesn't. I'm not dumm as you might suppose, I know Linux rather well, but this is not the way to approach average computer users. For instance: I started up in nomodeset, I unistalled the Nouveau driver, I even blacklisted it, I imported the Nvidia repository, I installed the appropriate driver for my card and I restarted the system. Result: nada. Indeed, I could have studied further on. But that is not my point. As the most of the average consumers don't understand anything of Windows (I don't prefer Windows), and why should they, you can't expect average consumers understand something of Linux, which is not more difficult, but it's something different. It has much to do with perceptions. The more things don't work out of the box, the more perceptions with average consumers could be confirmed that Linux sucks. Might be wrong perceptions, but at the consumer market that doesn't matter. Linux has it's strong points and it's weak points. The weakest point in my opinion is not the os itself, but the marketing and perception behind it. That's also my point in regard to command line apps. Consumers in average are grahic and visual oriented, NOT command line like. If you're confident with the command line, well nothing wrong with it for you. The DOS era ended about 20 years ago. The graphic/visual era came in and that made the use of desktops and laptops accessible for the average consumers. Nothing else. So next to that: average consumers who want to try Linux (let they be blessed!) want their 3D graphic drivers out of the box.Linux developpers have to understand that, and if not, they should listen a little bit more to marketing people. Concerning my languages: I'm Dutch and I speak, read and write in English, German and French. So that couldn't be any problem at all.

i somehow don't understand your concerns :o
installing the nvidia-prop drivers is no "biggy" thus if you're able to read some english or whatever language you prefer you will find with 200% a page where it is described to the tiniest bit how you can 'build' them from source (if running a shell script can be described as "from source") anyways their is a nvidia repository available now and you can easily install them from their if you disabled kms and even this was easy because there where tons of tutorials :s
my last 2 cents :o i only replied because of your last two sentences ! living in the 21st century doesn't mean that gui's are superior to cmd-apps only because their shiny and "easy" to use :s just an example -> i prefer wodim (cmd) to burn my isos over any other img-burn application because its freaking easy to use gives enough output if some errors occur and its fast !
oww and i switched from windows(7) to opensuse in february and one of the most things i love about linux is the command line, if you are comfortable with typing mv/cp/rm/whatever with a directy or shutting your pc down with your keyboard instead of searching 2 weeks for a "turn off" button then your better of with a command line ! but well taste is something everbody has to decide themselv so don't blame cmd-apps for not having a shiny gui only because you're not comfortable with !

Am I the only that have installed 2 opensuse 11.3 64 bit, addded the nvidia repos, installed the driver through yast and no problem at all? Rebooted, all done :-)
Kwin with effects, perfect, Compiz, perfect

from the top of my head:
if you install any future opensuse version, during installation
it should ask, if the computer should be a install.server.
many many computers will NOT have a floppy drive or DVD-rom drive
anymore; BUT they will have a net.boot feature... so USE the power:
linux is FREE, let's us it: tftp, dhcp, samba and/or nfs.
(the floppy and the DVD-rom drive might be gone, but what is 5 gigs
on a modern HDD?)
-
possibility to cache updates locally. having to update 3 and more
computer over the slow internet connection is not smart. if one (suse.computer)
has the newest stuff, let that computer give it to the others on the
FAST lan.
-
more options for the (great) SuseFirewall2. we have a firewall, we have
NAT/masquerading ... now it's time for the heavy-duty stuff that iptables and tc
can do. like a descent deafult editor for the available options in iptables and tc.
(example hint: http://tinyurl.com/ykey83l)
-
totem for default media player.
-
last but definitely not least: "Keep up the good work and ... have fun!
-
(disclaimer: certainly guru/wizard can do ll this already, but we? are trying to
make it more easy for newbies.) thx! : D

I can understand your frustration with the Graphics driver. But please: leave the command line applications alone. You don't have to use them if you prefer so.
Willem, I couldn't agree more. I nearly ditched 11.3 to go back to 11.2 because of this driver mess. On my machine the nouveau driver insisted on using 1024x768 and refused to use any other resolutions. Please stop integrating alpha quality stuff as default selection. The nVidia driver works great once the workaround is in place.
