But most importantly, it goes against our philosophy. We want to do things open, collaborate, work with others. Because that works best in the long run... Creating your own little world, your own little garden (like Apple, or, lately, Ubuntu) is simply not a good long-term solution. Both for yourself and especially for your customers/users!

Joseph,

OBS would not have developed into what it is, if it had not been open.

once it is open, you can't close it anymore, that would be stealing from the contributors.

Why doesn't openSUSE embrace the virtues of closed source software and keep OBS all to ourselves? :-) If OBS builds .deb files, Ubuntu will be able to have up-to-date versions of software, then there'll be no stopping them. First Google is paying kids to make YaST available to other distros, now this... :-( At least trade distros for one of their proprietary tools or features - say, Ubuntu has to tell openSUSE how to make an ARM version of their distro or Sabayon has to set up the openSUSE Live CD to play rock and roll music as it boots the way theirs does. Maybe a patent cross-licensing deal so that Ubuntu could use our imaginary chameleon mascot, "Geeko", and we get to use their imaginary CEO mascot, "Mark Shuttleworth" (we already get to use "Steve Ballmer" thanks to the Novell/Microsoft deal). Puppy has no packaging ability at all... we could let them use OBS (I've tried pitching it to them, but they're more inclined to (re)invent everything themselves, including programming in their own programming language, Puppy Basic!) and they could tell us how to make a fully functional 180MB openSUSE CD (which they really could do by modifying their Woof distro-building tool). We could teach Arch Linux how to sign packages and they could teach us how to create a fully-documented, up-to-date, easy to use and unbroken Wiki like theirs. I hear the Gnome 3 people are missing some minimize buttons we might be able to trade them for something. But first we have to embrace CCSS (Commercial and Closed Source Software) and stop giving it all away!
