@bob actually, we've patched GNOME 3 in some areas. Not by creating a new shell or heavily deviating from upstream but only making some minor improvements. after all big deviations like Ubuntu and Mint do only make things worse as upstream has more time and resources to do things properly. Usually these 'improvements' are a matter of taste for 1 or 2 ppl who do it. If you happen to share their taste, awesome. If you don't - bad for you. That is not the way to go...

The work of the GNOME community is not so taste-based but done by experienced designers. You can't expect 1 or 2 volunteers to 'improve' that, sorry. YOU (and even I) might like it more but that doesn't say much.

Better to pick something like SUSE Studio and create customized versions of shells there - easy to do with KDE's Plasma stuff and GNOME Shell's javascript UI. Then it will still be based on a solid, won't-go-away distro like openSUSE with pro support, yet can be customized as much as you want.

As systemd is being actively maintained and improved we consider it the future of booting on Linux - and at some point it makes sense to move on to whatever is the future :D

We had people willing to work on it, the maintainers of the old system wanted to move over - it is natural to move over to new technology at that point. That always introduces small issues, surely, but if that would stop us we'd still be using Linux 1.0 etc :D

Looks nice, but I'll be sticking with the last gnome version. Gnome 3 is way too full of fluff at the expense of usability. I still rock ubuntu LTS for stability. If anyone can reccommend something more stable I'd be much obliged.

It seems the developers prefer GNOME3. It's too bad if openSUSE do not keep focus on KDE. Then openSUSE will be as plain as other distriutions.
