I saw that strip of apps on the left in Ubuntu. THAT’S Gnome? The other apps look like Windows 8, “All Apps.”

Not all apps are ported to the new app menu system yet. The new breed of ‘GNOME Apps’: Disks, Documents, Contacts, Web etc should work with it though. For the rest it is business as usual.

I am using the GNOME shell on this version of OpenSUSE 12.2 (the live CD version) now, and the app menu is not there – it is in the usual place at the top of the window. Does that just not apply to the live CD?

It doesn’t require Qt patching, and we have the packages already. look for appmenu in the KD* repos. I’ll post a howto next week.

(FWIW you’re thinking of the initial Ubuntu Ayatana app menu work that requires GTK patching to work. Last I heard our GTK maintainers were not going to adapt that patch.)

It’s there, but optional. Has been for quite a while. I believe it requires some patching of Qt, however, so I am unsure if openSUSE supports it out of the box.

Yes, plus the menu is hidden under the app name there, like the Chrome menu button located in the title bar.

The section “openSUSE customisations”, otherwise the differences are in the selection of third party apps and versions, and small differences in build options. The aim is to implement upstream’s vision faithfully; they put a lot of work in!
