Hi,
I had found some of major issues while setting up OpenSuSE 12.2 Based servers.

1. YaST-CA.pem will not be created after creating Common Server Certificate. We have to manually Copy One of Server Certificate into /etc/ssl/certificates folder and rename it.

2. Though I gave same file name (as mentioned in OpenLDAP server) in OpenLDAP client, it gives some error message. I have to later edit /etc/OpenLDAP/ldap.conf file and add a line TLS_REQCERT allow. I had to struggle hard in order to find these solutions.

3. GRUB2 is default boot loader, but still immatured. I can't change the configuration while in installation.

Can you please confirm whether these kind of issues are solved in OpenSuSE 12.3?

I guess it depends on the type of machine that you have. both the laptop and the pc that I have are about 5 years old but they both have duo core and 3 and 4gig RAM respectively.
I have tried KUbuntu on the machines and it starts up very fast, I tried Mandriva and it was the same. Now I am running Mageia 2 (KDE) and I realised that my hardware is not that old after all because the system is fast! Sorry but openSuse is the slowest os on my present hardware.
I have a colleague that starts up openSuse in 3 seconds but he has 12gig of RAM. Well sorry but I just can't afford a new machine everytime there is a new release.

Thanks for the reply and the suggestions but unfortunately it's too little too late on Suse's side.
I have been using Suse since 8.0 and I have invested a lot of energy and time trying to make things work smoothy for the past years. I love a lot of things about Suse but there are always issues.
I had problems with speed both on the laptop and on the desktop. I just could't bother anymore so I decided to try somethig else. I installed Mageia 2 and the first thing that surprised me is that I didn't have to search for nVidia drivers (I hate the default nouveau because it doesn't deliver what I want), the second thing was the speed! and I could even install Skype from it's tainted repo. Music, videos everything works out of the box.
Why can't Suse do that?

I can agree here. Anything you could say about openSUSE it is certainly not slow. I have noticed a minor bug with KDE startup; Though I have noticed it in other distros as well so it is probably an upstream issue.

Hi Bobby,

You must have some issues with hardware drivers (just the most likely guess), as 12.2 is in fact very fast, much faster than the older releases, and certainly faster than fedora and ubuntu (checked on the same laptop). I'd suggest you to check the logs, explore some lspci and lsmod outputs and perhaps post those in the opensuse forums.
12.2 has indeed a lot of problems, but speed is not one of them. I've been seriously considering to switch to something else (for the first time since suse 5.3), but after some time spent in searches got back to opensuse 12.2. I've been hit by nouveau, systemd, openjdk and skype quite badly, mainly because one doesn't expect SO MUCH handwork to be done in such a mature distro as opensuse (and 12.2 as a version number tells us it's not the first day on the market). Still, with all pros and cons, opensuse remains the best. Alas, it doesn't use it's full potential - in my opinion!

I have been using openSuse from the days of SuSe 8.0 and for the first time I am seriously thinking about switching to another distro! My main reason is speed.
OpenSuse 12.2 is very stable and looks wonderful but it takes eternity to start up and the applications are the same - slow.

I tried at least two distros on the same machines this weekend and they have showed me how fast and responsive Linux really is!
One of these distros is Mageia. It's a very nice, beautiful and responsive distro but I miss zypper, YaSt and the powerful openSuse repos. Still I would switch if openSuse doesn't fix it's speed problems.
A Pentium Duo Core with 4 Gig of RAM and an nVidia card should show some real good performance.
If other distros can do it then why can't openSuse?

Hi Melvin,

Thanks for the feedback. It's unfortunate that you've got graphics issues and I hope a future version of openSUSE will do better in this regard - issues like these are often due to graphics driver issues in the kernel and Xorg stack and only a newer version can really help there.

you can try tumbleweed or OBS repositories like getting new kernels from kernel.opensuse.org but if it doesn't work and Ubuntu does - by all means, use it, we'll be ready for you with our next release :D

What Fedora did is quite cool and we hope to improve our testing coordination for the future, this was a nice idea. Thanks for pointing it out!
