openSUSE 11.4 and KDE

March 2nd, 2011 by

openSUSE KDE desktop with Dolphin and Gwenview KDE fans must definitely watch out for openSUSE 11.4, which will be the first major Linux distribution to feature KDE’s Plasma Workspaces, Applications and Development Platform version 4.6. This trio of releases by the KDE community brings much better performance as well as many usability and feature improvements all over the place. Upgraders will feel a double dose of KDE goodness, as openSUSE 11.4 brings two major releases’ improvements over the KDE 4.4 shipped with openSUSE 11.3. (more…)

Build Service team releases new versions fixing security problems

March 2nd, 2011 by

The openSUSE Build Service team has released verison 2.0.8 and 2.1.6. of OBS. Both versions are fixing a critical security leak which can be miss-used to modify projects or packages without having write permission there. We highly recommend to update your instance of OBS as soon as possible to these new versions. Version 1.7 is not affected by this issue.

Open-Bugs-Day Held Last Sunday

February 25th, 2011 by

As announced previously, openSUSE organized an Open-Bugs-Day held on January 20. Many people participated, including a large number of contributors new to #opensuse-testing on Freenode servers!

Results

Bernhard Wiedemann created a nice tool at openbugs.zq1.de to avoid the situation where two people work on the same issue. There were VM’s prepared with VNC access so people could easily test and someone in the team ran his first KVM Virtual Machine at home, thanks to the help of the rest of the team. Another participant filed his first bug on bugzilla (that would be bug number 673629). In the end, the team went through and updated 60% of all old 11.4 bugs (=132 of 219)!

And of course, they had a lot of fun…

Finally, we have some crude statistics about yesterday’s most active participants, who can get the geeko-gear reward (just send your details to Bernhard Wiedermann)!
This list is generated with a perl script | sort | uniq -c | sort -n -r | head -11
49 Rainer Hurtado Navarro
34 Bernhard Wiedemann
24 Pieter De Decker
13 Larry Finger
11 Terje J. Hanssen
10 Malvern Star
10 Karsten König
9 Michal Hucko
8 Refilwe Seete
8 John McInnes
8 Jason Craig

Congrats on the great work!

Future

The team decided it would be nice to have such events on a regular basis, so 2011-04-02 is proposed for the next Open-Bugs-Day.

30 min downtime for build.opensuse.org and software

February 24th, 2011 by

We need a short service outage to move one of the big storages behind the openSUSE Buildservice to a new location. As result, build.opensuse.org and software.opensuse.org/search would not be available for ca. 30min.

OBS Books Project

January 18th, 2011 by

openSUSE Build Service (OBS) has a problem. It is horrible powerful, but no one knows. Or no one knows how to make use of it in short.

Our documentation exists only in the wiki so far. While the wiki is still and will remain as a documentation resource, several of us OBS users and developers think we need something more structured and edited. A real book in short, which you can read to get an entire overview.

Therefore we started to create the infrastructure to write such books, it is part of the openSUSE documentation project. This means the documentation is written in docbook and hosted in svn.
