Linux for Education Updated

December 22nd, 2009 by

The openSUSE Education team is proud to announce the availability of the updated Li-f-e hybrid ISO. Unlike the official openSUSE release, the Edu project’s Li-f-e flavor will get updated almost on a monthly basis. These minor releases will contain all the official openSUSE 11.2 updates, some important package version updates and may be addition of new features too. With these gradual improvements we are hoping to make one of the best Education OS even better.

A number of changes have been made since the last release:

  • All official openSUSE 11.2 updates.
  • Sugar 0.86.3
  • KIWI-LTSP 0.8.1 including the latest LTSP packages. See the Quick Start instructions to enable the services. LTSP allows you to use old(and new) computers as diskless thin-clients without modification.
  • New Netboot option in the boot menu, uses gPXE to boot from network. This requires a server (LTSP) serving the PXEboot images. This option is useful if the LAN card on the PC does not support PXE booting.
  • Inkscape 0.47
  • Added new packages: Tomcat, Kdenlive for video editing, and Code::Blocks IDE.
  • Most of the Education software is updated, including GCompris and Moodle.
  • Installation improvements: saner partition suggestion and online update is not run in second stage. Do it manually via “zypper ref && zypper up” if required.

The list of applications on this disk, including Educational softwares can be found on the openSUSE wiki.

You can download the DVD via SourceForge.net, using BitTorrent, or get the Metalink. The md5sum is 68653e091842642b3c1d4a7387ccba60.

It’s best to use rsync, wget, or another download manager to download the image as Web browsers are known to get incomplete downloads.

The fastest way to download is using a metalink client. Here is an example of using the command line metalink client aria2:

aria2c -c http://www.opensuse-education.org/download/ISOs/openSUSE-Edu-li-f-e-11.2-latest-i686.iso.metalink

As always, we would like to hear from you! See the communication page on the openSUSE wiki for ways to reach the education team.

openSUSE-Education 1.0 for SLE10 and 11.1

December 22nd, 2008 by

The first version of the openSUSE-Education Add-on is drawing to a close. By releasing the final version for SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 and the first Release Candidate for 11.1, we hopefully have the first community Add-On media which is available for each (open)SUSE Release, soon!

The only thing left to reach this great goal: fix the last bugs for the openSUSE 11.1 release!

So please help us releasing a bugfree openSUSE-Education release 1.0 for 11.1 in the next days by testing and reporting bugs in our bugzilla. (Note: The next release should be the final one for 11.1 – and the completion of our 1.0 version.)

You can either use our Online-Repository by adding it via the “Community-Repositories” Section in YaST or via the “Add-on”-YaST module – or use the ISO-Image (2.6GB) as “non online” version. Both contain the same packages.

The RC1 release contains a lot of package updates (and fixes) – a complete Changelog for all packages is available in the root-directory of our installation source. There are still 10 packages left in the Build Service  which needs fixes to build for 11.1 – hopefully we get them fixed soon enough for the final release.

openSUSE-Education: Live-CD, CD-Cover and 1.0 Beta2 for openSUSE 11.1

December 4th, 2008 by

Here are the first results of the great last Meeting of the openSUSE-Education Team two weeks ago…

We are proud to announce the first openSUSE Live-CD containing applications from openSUSE-Education – created via Studio by Andrea Florio!

http://www.opensuse-education.org/download/ISOs/openSUSE-Education_1.0.i686-0.0.5-LiveCD.iso (696M)

This ISO image is based on openSUSE 11.0 (x86) and enhanced with a few of our applications for Education. We are currently testing the possibilities of SUSE Studio with the Live-Media – and might release updated versions in a shorter timeframe. Stay tuned!

openSUSE-Education 1.0 for 11.0 is Ready

September 28th, 2008 by

The openSUSE-Education Add On for openSUSE 11.0 is ready! Big steps compared to the 10.3 release:

  • Better LTSP integration: now Easy-LTSP helps you to configure your whole LTSP server with one graphical tool and the clients can run local applications like Firefox to save resources on the LTSP server.
  • Many package updates and new applications (the repository contains >1300 packages now!) – please have a look at the current patterns on your local machine to see the big improvement.
  • Direct integration into the community repositories – with “Education” being part of the “YaST2 – Software Repositories” module the online repository is just one click away.
  • Separate online update repository: if you like, just enable the education update repository to get the latest updates of your education applications.
  • Complete new structure for the development of the next openSUSE-Education releases. Please have a look at the mailing list to get a short overview.

You can either download the ISO image from here:

http://www.opensuse-education.org/download/ISOs/openSUSE-Education-1.0-for-11.0.iso

(md5sum: 8b9a756f775c052ac38d47fe7d46361e)

Or add the online repository as installation source:

http://www.opensuse-education.org/download/repo/1.0/11.0/ (Note: Please re-add it if you’ve added it before – just delete the current repository via YaST and re-add it.)

A delta-iso against RC1 (240MB) is also available.

Announcing openSUSE-Education for 10.3

June 18th, 2008 by

openSUSE-Education LogoGood things come to those who wait: I think we’ve waited long enough to release the first openSUSE-Education version for openSUSE 10.3.

Just use the YaST2 “Add-On Product” module to add our Online-Repository. A more detailed description can be found at the openSUSE wiki.

For those without permanent Internet connection, we’ve created a DVD ISO which can be downloaded here:

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/education/openSUSE-Education-1.0-for-10.3.iso (3,7GB)

To give new users a hint how to install the DVD, we’ve created PDFs in english, german and italian language containing all needed information and in addition some descriptions for LTSP, GCompris, iTalc and Tuxpaint. We want to reuse existing wiki articles for this in 11.0 and add these descriptions also to the Helpcenter. The PDFs are also available in the documentation directory of the DVD.
