The openSUSE Education team is proud to present openSUSE-Edu Li-f-e (Linux for Education) based on openSUSE 11.4. The image is a “hybrid” iso image which can be used to burn a Live DVD or to create a Live USB stick.
This release includes the latest carefully selected software for students, educators as well as parents. The software selection encompasses everything required to make a productive computing experience e for either home or educational use without having to install anything additional. We plans to update the Edu Li-f-e 11.4 image regularly with both official updates from openSUSE 11.4 and from the education project.
Right out of the box, educators and parents will be pleased to see over 150 applications to fit their student’s needs. A wide range including mental exercise tools like Brain Workshop and GBrainy, science apps like Chemtool, mathematical programs like Euler, artistic development like TuxPaint and GIMP, study aids like the popular IGNuit flash cards app makes getting started right after installation a pleasing experience.
And education administrators will love the inclusion of highly-regarded server applications such as Moodle, ATutor, and FreeSMS. Deploying services for your institution with the underlying rock solid stable openSUSE 11.4 operating system has never been better!
The Live DVD contains KIWI-LTSP server that can be enabled even by a non-technical user, it comes bundled with tons of useful applications from openSUSE Education, Build Service and Packman repositories. With the KIWI-LTSP server you can PXE (network) boot other PCs to use this live DVD without installing or modifying anything on them. Booting from hard disk again will leave those PCs as they were. (Please note that running LTSP from Live DVD/USB is meant for demo/testing purpose only, install on the hard disk to use it in production).
This distribution includes LAMP stack (LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) that is needed for developing or hosting PHP websites and all other major development tools. It also provides a rich multimedia experience out of the box.

At the openSUSE conference almost two months ago a special Educational track on Saturday featured talks about the progress on openSUSE Edu-L.i.f.e, the applications it ships and many other educational topics. The goal of the openSUSE Edu team is to cater for students, educators as well as parents and the software they develop, package and ship has everything required to make computers productive for either home or school usage.
At the conference over 30 people discussed topics including X2go and thin client computing in general, several openSUSE based educational distributions, opsi, a Client Management System for Windows clients based on Linux servers, groupware (including openXchange), PyKota printing accounting software, the KIOSK tool and more.
“Collaboration Across Borders” – Under this moto the openSUSE Community received in Nuremberg several hundreds of Free Software enthusiasts and contributors. Giving a strong statement to it’s moto, the openSUSE Conference received ambassadors from the Fedora Project and Debian Project as well as people from Mandriva/Mageia, Slackware, Skolelinux and many other distributions. Moreover, many downstream projects presented their work, seeking cooperation with the openSUSE community.

Compared to last year the openSUSE conference grew over 30% from 225 to 290 visitors and we heard many comments about how well organized it was. As Thomas Thym wrote in his blog, it was an event for and by the openSUSE community – not the kind of conference where anyone tells anyone else what to do or what has to happen. The openSUSE Education team is proud to announce the availability of the updated Li-f-e hybrid ISO. Unlike the official openSUSE release, the Edu project’s Li-f-e flavor will get updated almost on a monthly basis. These minor releases will contain all the official openSUSE 11.2 updates, some important package version updates and may be addition of new features too. With these gradual improvements we are hoping to make one of the best Education OS even better.

You can download the DVD via SourceForge.net, using BitTorrent, or get the Metalink. The md5sum is 68653e091842642b3c1d4a7387ccba60.
It’s best to use rsync, wget, or another download manager to download the image as Web browsers are known to get incomplete downloads.
The fastest way to download is using a metalink client. Here is an example of using the command line metalink client aria2:

Like openSUSE, the openSUSE-Education team use a great software named MirrorBrain from Peter Poeml, which makes it possible to redirect download requests transparently to the nearest mirror. As result, our endusers normally didn’t even noticed that they get their files from a mirror instead of the original system.
Result: even if our current hoster still limits the bandwith of our main server, our users get their software faster than ever.
openSIS is proud to announce that we are beginning construction of a Linux server on an IBM iSeries computer using a SUSE LPAR. This is a joint venture proof of concept with one of IBM’s premier hardware resellers, Mainline Information Systems. The goal of this effort is to demonstrate that openSIS and many of the other packages offered in the openSUSE-Education project will be viable solutions that run natively on the IBM iSeries.
The proof of concept is designed to demonstrate the viability of openSIS and openSUSE on the iSeries platform, which runs an older green screen SIS (TERMs) for approximately half of Florida’s school districts. If the proof of concept is successful, OS4Ed and Mainline will be positioned to offer Florida districts an alternative SIS that is free and modern and will run natively on the same hardware they use today. This will allow these school districts to migrate to a modern web-based SIS with no licensing costs, no proprietary software licensing costs and no hardware costs. Best of all, school IT personnel will not have to be retrained to support the hardware platform as it will remain the same. This is very important during a time where Pearson School Systems is ending SasiXP support in 2010 and state budget cuts in the billions are being made.
