Volunteers needed for the conference

August 1st, 2011 by

Brave enough? As you know, the third international openSUSE Conference is happening in a couple of weeks from now, you already should be registered! For the organization team this means that we are really picking up pace now and start to feel dizzy. One of the reasons for that is that we are short on helping hands. We especially miss “boots on the ground“, we need your help!

Being a boot on the ground means we need people to help us at the conference in September. There is no special knowledge about the location or other details needed. So far we have 5 tasks where we desperately need people to help out. Venue setup, Registration Desk, Session Chairs and the Snack Bar. Read on to learn how you can contribute to the success of the conference.

Conference travel sponsorship program

July 23rd, 2011 by
The openSUSE conference team is starting the travel sponsorship program to financially support community members to attend the conference.
Apply now online until August 5th!

Travel round the globe but first see RWX³The openSUSE conference “RWX³” is the place to be for anyone using, working on or taking advantage of the openSUSE Project. No matter if you use our technology such as the Open Build Service, contribute packages to 12.1 or evangelize the world as an Ambassador, this is your conference. You can also meet a lot of your friends from other projects like KDE, GNOME, Linux, Samba, LibreOffice and, of course many people from other GNU/Linux distributions with whom we collaborate on technologies like packaging, appstores or low-level tools like systemd.

The conference takes place from September 11th to 14th in Nuremberg, Germany. Nürnberg is quite easy and cheap to reach from nearly everywhere in Europe but it happens to be that the world is slightly bigger than that. We have contributors from India, Taiwan, the US, Brazil, Australia and many other countries around the globe. A trip to the conference might be affordable to most, but we also have contributors at the beginning of their career where money is usually tight. No matter the reason why, if you need financial assistance to be able to attend the openSUSE conference we have something for you: The travel sponsorship program. And while the conference organization team is relentlessly looking for more sponsors for it, the team has enough commitments by now to start the program today. Hooray! If you want to come to the conference in September but need assistance with the travel costs, you can apply to be sponsored via email now. Read on to learn how!

July 13th, 2011 by

rwx3 logo
In our last article focusing on openSUSE Conference sessions, we discussed the BoF. In today’s article, we’ll explore the why, what and how of a workshop.

Teach Them To Fish

Remember how it is better to teach a man to fish than to bring him food? This is exactly what a workshop is all about. You can choose to be a one-man show doing all the work yourself, or you can teach others to join in with you and make your particular software project even stronger. And with our RWX³ theme, the openSUSE Conference is the perfect host for your workshop.

rwx3 logo
Over the last month the conference team has received a large number of proposed sessions for the openSUSE conference. However, we also realize we have not entirely capitalized on the potential for especially the ‘interactive’ sessions we wanted. So we extend the deadline with two weeks to allow more BoF, Workshop and Hack sessions to be submitted. And we’ll release some more articles to explain what we want! (more…)

openSUSE Summer Camp Greece 2011

June 20th, 2011 by

Summer in Greece! Is the weather too hot for you to code or contribute to your favorite FOSS project? Do you need some motivation and a refreshing swim? Come to our Summer Camp!

The Greek openSUSE community is organizing its first openSUSE Summer Camp, in central Greece at Grand Platon Hotel at Olympiaki akti. This is is the beach of the city of Katerini. The doors will be open from the 15th to the 17th of July 2011, at the Heart of Summer!

Sounds awesome, I’ll book my tickets.

So, you’ll be there. What can you expect?

Our goal is to bring FOSS communities closer and encourage people to contribute to their favorite projects.

A lot of people, with little to a lot of experience can benefit from the workshops included in our program, during which we will work on things like translation, wiki usage, coding, packaging and much more, showing how to work inside a community and how to collaborate with others!

Hmmm. But I could go swimming…

There will be relaxing and swimming of course! But hey, we have a common passion, don’t we?

We love what we do, we are having fun contributing to FOSS and we hate doing it alone in our rooms during Summer time. Besides coding, translating and all other ‘working stuff’ there will also be plenty of sun and beach, a large swimming pool and plenty of beers – all paid by you since we only sponsor the sun, the fun and all the other free stuff…

We are looking forward to seeing you at the openSUSE Summer Camp Greece!

Please use info@os-el.gr to contact the team organizing the event.
