Learn More About Free Software Next Week in Prague

The openSUSE Conference 2012 takes place next week from October 20th to 23rd in Prague, Czech Republic.

When you first step into the world of Free Software, it isn’t always easy: to paraphrase Richard Stallman, we are used to “trading freedom for convenience”. Understanding why you are using Free/Libre/OpenSource Software and seeing it at work can be inspiring – you might well find yourself on the path to be a Free/Libre Open Source Software contributor or advocate. Seeing how the principles of FLOSS are applied to things other than software can be equally inspiring and like Free Software, it is a revolution you can contribute to! You’ll find this and more inspiration in the Future Media track at this year’s conference.

This track aimed specifically at bringing a wider scope to the conference and with talks by people like Georg Greve, founder of the Free Software Foundation Europe, Lydia Pintscher from the WikiMedia Foundation and Bas van Abel from the FabLab movement, the sessions will you a proper knowledge base on the why and what of the ‘open’ movement.

First openSUSE Conference Sneak Peek

Less than two weeks from now the openSUSE Conference will start. The location itself is almost enough reason to attend: the openSUSE Conference 2012 is in the beautiful, historic city of Prague. For those jaded by gothic beauty, the conference program will provide all the motivation you need!

If you’re new to the world of Linux and software conferences, you might think that you’ll be out of your depth, especially when you recognize some of the leading lights in Free Software development and culture among the speakers. But there’s plenty at the openSUSE conference for the Linux newbie – in fact, it’s the perfect way to dive into the world of open source. Held in context with the local Linux Days and incorporating also SUSE Labs and a Gentoo miniconference, this openSUSE conference has something for everyone.

oSC 2012 BoF sessions can be scheduled!

Within three weeks, in Prague, the openSUSE Conference will start off again. Like last year, we have not only an awesome program but also reserved time for small sessions to get work done. We’ve got a wiki page where you can schedule such sessions before the event and on the event itself we’ll allow scheduling more sessions Unconference style. openSUSE Conference 2012 – Invitation to Lightning Talks and Speedy Geeko

The openSUSE Conference in Prague is about to happen and we know that all of you are really excited about it. One more year with great talks and workshops and the warmth of the openSUSE Community around. Being there is really awesome and being a part of it is really great. Since having fun has no limits for us we feel the need to ask you the following:

  • Did you wanted to submit a talk and you were late?
  • Do you feel like talking about something that has to do with openSUSE?
  • Do you feel like talking about something that has nothing to do with the openSUSE?
  • Do you feel the need to have an on-stage group-hug with Izabel and Kostas?
  • Can you do all that in 2 to max 5 minutes?

The Call for Papers is closed and the sessions for this awesome four-plus-one event are decided upon and scheduled. It is time to grab a pen and paper, look at the exciting conference schedule here and start making a little plan of what sessions to attend! openSUSE Conference is coming… Sponsorship request starts today!

The openSUSE Travel Support Team is happy to announce that they are ready to process applications to sponsor openSUSE people to attend openSUSE Conference. The Conference will be held in Prague, Czech Republic – October 20-23, 2012.

The Travel Committee can reimburses up to 80% of travel costs and lodging costs such as plane ticket, train ticket, bus ticket, hotel and hostel. Expenses with Visa, documentation, food, extras are up to the requester, The Travel Team won’t be able to cover since is looking for sponsor as many people as possible.

Important !!! The Sponsorship Request period for openSUSE Conference starts on August 10 ending August 20, 2012. Responses will be given before August 30, 2012.

Some additional comments:

* A clear and complete application is faster and easier to process.

* The Travel Team won’t be able to book or pay in advance for any requester.

* We cannot fulfill all requests, keep in mind that there is no guarantee you will get sponsored.

* Sponsorship decisions are influenced by the history of the requester, like having followed the requirement of writing a report about a conference you attended with sponsorship or having send in the required paperwork in time.

* Your involvement with openSUSE is pretty relevant.

* If you were part of Google Summer of Code as openSUSE student or mentor you should mention it in your application.

* If you submitted an abstract to be presented at openSUSE Conference you should  mention it in your application.

* It’s important you tell us which airport you will be departing from.

*  Try to get the best fares for tickets and lodging. Remember you still have to pay at least 20% yourself and the committee will verify the amount requested looking for the best offers on public website (E.g. KAYAK, Expedia, e-Dreams,…).

The Travel Team sends a reply upon receiving your application. We will then wait for all applicants to send in their requests for the event and only once we have a full overview, responses will be given. Please do not send personal emails, always CC the travel-support team in your replies.

openSUSE Conference has a location and a CfP out!

We are happy to announce that after scouting many wonderful places, having long discussions and many last minute changes, we finally have a location and date set for the openSUSE Conference 2012 (oSC12) and our CfP committee is ready to accept talk proposals!

This year oSC12 will take place at the Czech Technical University in Prague. The campus is located in the district Dejvice and is next to an underground station that gets you directly to the historic city center. The conference will start at October 20 and end on the 23th of the same month.

Co-location and theme

This years openSUSE Conference theme is “Bootstrapping awesome!”. Why? Not just because of new new city and many new people in the organizational team. But also because we are not alone! Yes, like last year, the SUSE Labs conference will join us but there is more. This year the openSUSE conference will help ‘bootstrap’ two more conferences who share a location with us. This will be their first year, but we’re sure they will turn out to be as awesome as openSUSE Conf is and join us for a lot of fun ;-)

The other conferences are Gentoo miniconf and the LinuxDays conference.

LinuxDays Conference

LinuxDays Conference is a community effort replacing the well known commercial LinuxExpo conference, which was big event in Czech republic with a long tradition. Unfortunatelly this event died this year as the company running it decided it was no longer worth it. A team of local people decided to pick this up and organize the LinuxDays Conference to ensure a great tradition wouldn’t get lost!

Like LinuxExpo, this event will focus on the Czech speaking Free/Libre Software community and have an emphasis on practical and relatively easy sessions in Czech. The LinuxDays Conference will happen on the weekend of October 20 and 21.

The openSUSE Conference team is extremely happy to be able to co-locate with LinuxDays! During the weekend we’ll work with them on providing beginner- and practical training sessions to the visitors. After all, our aim is to spread the use of Linux everywhere and this is a great opportunity to do so!

Gentoo Mini-summit

The Gentoo Mini-Summit will be a global Gentoo gathering. Organized by a few (open)SUSE/Gentoo people in Prague, it will bring together a number of core Gentoo developers to talk about and hack on the future of this geekiest-of-the-geekiest distribution and provide a place for (to-be) users to learn and get involved – after all, a Gentoo user IS a Gentoo developer!

There is a surprisingly large overlap between openSUSE and Gentoo, with a number of prominent openSUSE people using Gentoo as well and vice-versa. Moverover, the university where we’ll have the conference is a heavy user of Gentoo, making it an even better fit. Like with LinuxDays we’ll share a number of sessions with the Gentoo crowd and of course will be on the lookout for further collaboration – as always.

Call for Papers starting

From today, the 8th of May onwards, the openSUSE Conference Call for Papers is open. This means you can send in session proposals! Go to the openSUSE Conference website and submit your papers!

What kind of proposals do we look for?

With respect to our conference theme, we would like to receive proposals for talks, workshops or BoFs which fit with ‘bootstrapping’. So if you are doing some bootstrapping of your own, representing some very young project and you are just starting, come to tell us what are you up to! Maybe we can help! Also, if you are doing something special and unique in the distribution area, be it for or within openSUSE or not – we’d love to hear about it.

But don’t worry if your talk doesn’t seem to fit this theme, you can also teach people technologies that will help them bootstrap their projects. We always look forward to decent workshops in the area of distro building, packaging and such, and due to our co-location with LinuxDays, Gentoo and SUSE Labs, there is also plenty of room for hardcore hackingsessions and more beginner oriented workshops.

So if you’re unsure if your idea fits our conference, let us decide that for you – just send it in!

Collaboration

Each conference will have their own Call for Papers. However, the CfP teams will collaborate to ensure there is no overlap and that sessions relevant for multiple audiences are planned in the right spot. It is therefor appreciated if you properly select if your proposal also has relevance for the other communities; and what level (beginner-intermediate-expert) it has; and what languages you’d prefer to give the session in.

Also, if you’re a Gentoo developer but have something also relevant for openSUSE – we’d be happy to have your proposal. If you’re there to give a workshop to newbies about configuring their new Linux but can also talk about something much more technical – let us know.

OSC12 is coming to Prague in fall

The openSUSE Conference (oSC) is the yearly get-together of  our community to give its people a chance to meet face to face, talk to and inspire each other. Being together in one room, even in this day and age, beats every other collaboration method and is what forges cohesion and friendships. That is why the openSUSE Project tries to get together this conference every year for its contributors. But not only for them, the conference is also for anyone using, working with or taking advantage of the project. No matter if you use our technology, if you are one of our many friends from free and open source upstream projects or if you contribute to another GNU/Linux distribution this conference is for you.
