openSUSE 12.2 Release Publicity: Call for contributions

August 27th, 2012 by

Agustin, Ismael and Christopher working around a table on openSUSE release PRAs we enter the final straight towards the release of openSUSE 12.2, the openSUSE Team is busy preparing the release publicity. And this is where you, the openSUSE community come in. There are lots of ways you can help us share the workload. If you want to take on one of these jobs, mail the opensuse-project list to announce your contribution.

Screenshots

Look at the feature list, and if there is a feature there that you are familiar with and that looks good, snapshot it (according to the guidelines) and add them to the feature list or upload it to the openSUSE wiki page for general 12.2 screenshots.

Release Parties

This is probably the easiest way to contribute. Throw a release party with your friendly penguins and show them what’s cool about openSUSE 12.2

Social Media

We need a plan for announcing the 12.2 release on social media.  If you’re a social animal, volunteer to lead this for 12.2 on the Project list.

Sneak Peeks

People with detailed knowledge of specific areas of openSUSE are encouraged to help us write in-depth Sneak Peek articles.  The following topics are suggested:

Release Article Translations

Translate any of the above articles, the feature list (if you’re feeling tough), the product highlights into your language and promote them to your local blogs and news sites.

Bug Days

Organising a bug review and triage day for a specific area of openSUSE is one of the most effective ways to build a good team, increase their skills and familiarity with the technical side of our distribution.  Everyone can spot a bug, right? Look at ten bugs and everyone can perceive a pattern close the duplicates, and or spot the simi

Upgrade Instructions

The Support Database article on upgrading between openSUSE versions was last updated for openSUSE 11.4!  This would be easy to update, but keep in mind that for 12.2 the online update repositories have been split between Free and proprietary software, so both need to be added.

Akademy ES took place during the 18th, 19th and 20th of May 2012. Of course, openSUSE was there with a number of talks! openSUSE rocking LinuxTag

booth talk at openSUSE Booth

LinuxTag in Berlin is still going and openSUSE is having a lot of fun at the event. At our booth we feature daily talks about ownCloud (13:00-14:00), AppArmor (15:00-16:00) and if you were there Thursday a talk about color management and related tools.

You can also come by for our Old Toad beer and of course for openSUSE DVD’s, flyers, stickers and all the answers to your questions. We sorry to not have t-shirts this year but we promise to do better next year. So, come by the booth and talk to us!

Last but not least, if you are not at LinuxTag, either because it’s a long walk from where you are or you can’t make it due to other responsibilities – openSUSE has a nice treat for you. A team of Geeko’s is busily recording talks at LinuxTag, encoding them and putting them on our blip and youtube channels! That’s right, you can watch a selection of LinuxTag talks on blip.tv and on our openSUSE TV channel on youtube. Enjoy!

Join The G(r)EEKOS Release Parties!!!

November 29th, 2011 by

The openSUSE 12.1 distribution is released. After 8 months of hard work by the openSUSE community, the result could be something less than awesome. It is true that openSUSE 12.1 has received the best reviews of all famous open source sites and also has begun to gain many new members at the community, users and contributors.

Time to celebrate!

As is known the openSUSE community after the hard work done to release another great distribution, wants to celebrate it! And why not! Around the world communities, Linux groups and LUGs organize release parties.

The G(r)eekos Way!!!

openSUSE 12.1 is already installed on our machines by November 16. The Greek openSUSE community in collaboration with other communities, university Linux teams and LUGs invites you to come and celebrate the brand new release of openSUSE 12.1. Release parties are organized in many Greek cities! If you’re near a city where a party is organized do not hesitate to meet us, attend an Install Fest or a presentation about openSUSE 12.1, drink lots of beers, talk with us and have fun!

We expect to meet you at one of the parties, as well as help you organize one in your town! Good company, beer and goodwill are the key ingredients of a successful Release party!

On Thursday 1 December we will celebrate in Larisa with a presentation and an Install Fest at 13:00 and afterward we will go at a local tsipouradiko. Moreover, on Saturday 3 December in Kastoria at 19:00 at Zaza bar. Furthermore, on Sunday 4 December we will celebrate in Thesaloniki at Bar Pierrot Le Fou at 22:00. Last but not least there will be 3 more parties that are going to be announcend the next few days.

Have a lot of fun!

Coffee talk with Michael Miller

October 26th, 2011 by

Friday 16.09, while working on the openSUSE 12.1 marketing actions during the Marketing Hackfest, two of us had the spontaneous idea to suggest an interview to Michael Miller(Vice President of Global Alliances & Marketing for SUSE), asking him a few questions we could have in the openSUSE community. We did not have the time to go around, to find the FAQ or to choose the “best questions”. It was kind of “shall we do that, around a cup of coffee ? Why not ?”. And Michael Miller accepted our proposition, without any objection or any “joker’s need”.
