Join The G(r)EEKOS Release Parties!!!

November 29th, 2011 by

The openSUSE 12.1 distribution is released. After 8 months of hard work by the openSUSE community, the result could be something less than awesome. It is true that openSUSE 12.1 has received the best reviews of all famous open source sites and also has begun to gain many new members at the community, users and contributors.

Time to celebrate!

As is known the openSUSE community after the hard work done to release another great distribution, wants to celebrate it! And why not! Around the world communities, Linux groups and LUGs organize release parties.

The G(r)eekos Way!!!

openSUSE 12.1 is already installed on our machines by November 16. The Greek openSUSE community in collaboration with other communities, university Linux teams and LUGs invites you to come and celebrate the brand new release of openSUSE 12.1. Release parties are organized in many Greek cities! If you’re near a city where a party is organized do not hesitate to meet us, attend an Install Fest or a presentation about openSUSE 12.1, drink lots of beers, talk with us and have fun!

We expect to meet you at one of the parties, as well as help you organize one in your town! Good company, beer and goodwill are the key ingredients of a successful Release party!

On Thursday 1 December we will celebrate in Larisa with a presentation and an Install Fest at 13:00 and afterward we will go at a local tsipouradiko. Moreover, on Saturday 3 December in Kastoria at 19:00 at Zaza bar. Furthermore, on Sunday 4 December we will celebrate in Thesaloniki at Bar Pierrot Le Fou at 22:00. Last but not least there will be 3 more parties that are going to be announcend the next few days.

Have a lot of fun!

The IT world moves fast and along with it does social networking. It’s been only a few days since Google announced the limited availability of Google+ pages and already thousands of Google-plussers have created a Google+ page. Of course, we’re social too and thus the openSUSE project now has an official Google+ page!

Coffee talk with Michael Miller

October 26th, 2011 by

Friday 16.09, while working on the openSUSE 12.1 marketing actions during the Marketing Hackfest, two of us had the spontaneous idea to suggest an interview to Michael Miller(Vice President of Global Alliances & Marketing for SUSE), asking him a few questions we could have in the openSUSE community. We did not have the time to go around, to find the FAQ or to choose the “best questions”. It was kind of “shall we do that, around a cup of coffee ? Why not ?”. And Michael Miller accepted our proposition, without any objection or any “joker’s need”.

A big kudos to all our ambassadors who are working very hard to let the world know about openSUSE! They have been organizing events, speaking to people and writing about the awesomeness of openSUSE Project. Below are a few events that were openSUSE boosted in the last few days by our ambassadors. We probably still missed some as it can be hard to track everything that’s going on!

old school alternative

It’s the 20th Anniversary of Linux in August and the Linux Foundation is kicking off celebrations at The Collaboration Summit which takes place April 6-8, 2011 at the Hotel Kabuki in San Francisco. A highlight of the campaign is the annual Video Contest, which this year focuses on the 20 year celebration and will be judged by Linux Linus Torvalds himself.

The Linux Foundation has invited members and the community to create their own 20th anniversary videos in advance, which will be featured on the announcement date of April 6. Videos submitted early enough to be available during the first days of the contest will receive additional promotion by The Linux Foundation.

This is a fantastic opportunity for video makers in the openSUSE community to get some visibility for their work and their favorite distribution! (Not to mention showing off how easy it is to make awesome videos with openSUSE.)  So get started right away, and watch this space for details on how to submit your video.

Help the Project. Spread openSUSE DVDs!

February 18th, 2011 by

One of the easiest things to do to contribute to the free and open source movement and the openSUSE Project is to exercise your second free software freedom: The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.

To be able to do this comfortably the openSUSE Project, with the help of its sponsors, produces special promotional DVDs that contain live versions of both the KDE and GNOME desktops to try and which can also be used to install the a complete system. Those DVDs are perfect for introducing people to Linux and openSUSE. The openSUSE version included, 11.3, has all the qualities a newcomer wants. It’s a mature multi-purpose Linux operating system widespread among the free and open source software community for great user to user support. It comes with more with than 1,000 open source desktop applications, a full suite of server software and a rich selection of open source development tools.

So today the openSUSE Project would like to encourage you make use of your second free software freedom and help us to spread promo DVDs! It’s easy, think about where you could have the chance to spread them, then order them from us and do it. How about you putting them out in your local community centre, you give some to the computer science teacher of your daughter’s school or how about the guys that operate your university’s support desk? The clubhouse of your football club? The next concert or other event you attend or maybe on the toilet in your cousin’s bar? The internet café around the corner for sure! The possibilities are endless. If you think you know a place where people pick them up and try them, go for it! Helping us is as simple as ordering DVDs from us and going out to talk to the venues if you can leave a couple of them. You would be surprised how many people find a nice, shiny, green openSUSE DVD interesting enough to finally try this Linux thing they heard about so much on the internet.

So if you can think of anything just contact us about the amount you need (multiplies of 100 please) and where we need to send them. For this just send an email to

promodvds@opensuse.org

Don’t be shy about the amount, we don’t need to scrimp on them! If you think you can get spread 500 we’ll send you 500. Every DVD that is out there, is out there and might result in a new free and open source software and openSUSE user. This is the perfect opportunity to do something good for free and open source software and the openSUSE project, take it!

Update 2010-02-21: We received so many requests that we expect we have more requests than media, therefore please do not send further requests.
