Announcing RC1 of openSUSE-Education for 11.0

September 11th, 2008 by

It is nearly done… As announced on our roadmap, I’m happy to announce the first release candidate for our openSUSE-Education add on for openSUSE 11.0!

We’ve produced an Add-On-ISO image and updated the online repository with the new packages. Everyone who likes to help us testing is very welcome – let’s make it the best openSUSE-Education you’ve ever known :-)

You can find the ISO image here:

and the online repository here:

Now it’s time for the Education Team to focus on the documentation and fix the last package bugs. No more updates or additional packages are allowed until we released the final version for 11.0. Please report Bugs in our Bugzilla or try another way to communicate with us.

Known bugs:

  • Koha: missing dependencies. Still not fixed :-(
  • netbeans-ruby: wrong dependency
  • gnome pattern selection: still no provider which KDE applications doesn’t work under GNOME.
  • Atomix: Main window does not repaint during play

As some people in IRC and on the mailinglist already discussed the package selection, please report packages you want to have installed always or just shown up, so we can adapt our selection.

FYI: The final release of openSUSE-Education is planed for 25/09/2008, the next openSUSE-Education meeting is on Tuesday 2008/09/16 17:00 UTC.

Announcing openSUSE-Education for 10.3

June 18th, 2008 by

openSUSE-Education LogoGood things come to those who wait: I think we’ve waited long enough to release the first openSUSE-Education version for openSUSE 10.3.

Just use the YaST2 “Add-On Product” module to add our Online-Repository. A more detailed description can be found at the openSUSE wiki.

For those without permanent Internet connection, we’ve created a DVD ISO which can be downloaded here:

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/education/openSUSE-Education-1.0-for-10.3.iso (3,7GB)

To give new users a hint how to install the DVD, we’ve created PDFs in english, german and italian language containing all needed information and in addition some descriptions for LTSP, GCompris, iTalc and Tuxpaint. We want to reuse existing wiki articles for this in 11.0 and add these descriptions also to the Helpcenter. The PDFs are also available in the documentation directory of the DVD.
