The openSUSE Project is proud to announce the release of openSUSE 11.0 — everything you need to get started with Linux on the desktop and on the server. Promoting the use of Linux everywhere, the openSUSE Project provides free, easy access to the world’s most usable Linux distribution, openSUSE.

The 11.0 release of openSUSE includes more than 200 new features specific to openSUSE, a redesigned installer that makes openSUSE even easier to install, faster package management thanks to major updates in the ZYpp stack, and KDE 4, GNOME 2.22, Compiz Fusion, and much more.

On the Desktop

Whether you use GNOME or KDE, the openSUSE 11.0 desktop is a beautiful experience. Users have the choice of GNOME 2.22, KDE 4, KDE 3.5, Xfce, and more! See the screenshot page for a in-depth look at the openSUSE desktop.

GNOME 2.22

GNOME users will find a lot to like in openSUSE 11.0. openSUSE’s GNOME is very close to upstream GNOME, because Novell and openSUSE want to do as much work as possible in the upstream release. However, we do modify GNOME’s artwork to provide a unified look and feel for the distro. The default GNOME configuration, such as panel layout, is slightly different than “stock” GNOME, and the openSUSE GNOME team backports a number of bug fixes into our GNOME release to ensure stability and the best possible GNOME experience.

GNOME 2.22

GNOME 2.22 in openSUSE 11.0 includes the GNOME Virtual File System (GVFS), with better support for networked file systems, PulseAudio for better sound management, improvements in Evolution and Tomboy, and much more!

KDE 4.0

openSUSE 11.0 is the first openSUSE release to include a stable release of KDE 4.0. This release includes sweeping changes in the KDE desktop, and represents the next generation of KDE. This release includes a new desktop shell, called Plasma, a new look and feel (called Oxygen), and many interface and usability improvements.

KControl has been replaced with Systemsettings, which makes system configuration much easier. KDE’s window manager, KWin, now supports 3-D desktop effects.

KDE 4.0 doesn’t include KDEPIM applications, so the openSUSE team has included beta versions of the KDEPIM suite (KMail, KOrganizer, Akregator, etc.) from the KDE 4.1 branch that’s in development and scheduled to be released in July and for online update.

Note that KDE 3.5 is still available on the openSUSE DVD for KDE users who aren’t quite ready to make the leap to KDE 4.

KDE 4 on openSUSE 11.0

Compiz Fusion

The openSUSE desktop is not only a green glorious sight to behold, it’s also available in 3-D! Compiz Fusion is now the default in openSUSE 11.0. You’ll find a slew of interesting Compiz plugins, as well as easier configuration with Simple CompizConfig Settings Manager (CCSM) and the more comprehensive CompizConfig Settings Manager that allows detailed configuration of your Compiz setup. See the Sneak Peek for a detailed look at Compiz Fusion on openSUSE 11.0.

Firefox 3.0

Firefox is one of the most popular open source applications on the planet, and the openSUSE desktop just wouldn’t be complete without Mozilla Firefox. The 3.0 release has a number of new features and improvements that will make browsing the Web on openSUSE convenient and safe, including better site identification features, simplified add-on installation and management, detection of “phishing” sites, the ability to save tabs on exit, better download manager, and a new page zoom feature that lets you zoom text or the entire page.

Note that openSUSE 11.0 ships with Firefox 3.0 beta 5, and updates to the final 3.0 release will be available through online update.

Firefox 3.0

Banshee 1.0

openSUSE 11.0 includes Banshee 1.0. The Banshee media player has been re-written to improve performance and includes many new features, including video playback, better “shuffle” playback, support for iPods, MTP devices, and mass storage player devices, and support for podcasts and better Last.fm integration.

Banshee 1.0

OpenOffice.org 2.4

You can work hard and play hard with openSUSE. If you need a high-quality office suite that’s Microsoft Office compatible, look no further than Novell’s OpenOffice.org 2.4. This release includes import support for OpenXML, 3-D transitions in Impress, SVG import support, improved performance over standard OpenOffice.org, and better Excel support and VBA macro support.

NetworkManager 0.7

NetworkManager has been vastly improved since 10.3, and now includes support for multiple network interfaces and UTMS and EV-DO cards.

Under the Hood

  • Linux kernel 2.6.25
  • glibc 2.8
  • GCC 4.3

Media and Download

openSUSE is now available for immediate download. The openSUSE 11.0 release brings several new options for installation media, as well as familiar choices:

  • openSUSE 11.0 DVD 32-bit
  • openSUSE 11.0 DVD 64-bit
  • openSUSE 11.0 KDE 4 32-bit Live CD
  • openSUSE 11.0 GNOME 32-bit Live CD
  • openSUSE 11.0 KDE 4 64-bit Live CD
  • openSUSE 11.0 GNOME 64-bit Live CD

You can download openSUSE 11.0 via HTTP, FTP, BitTorrent, and Metalink from software.openSUSE.org.

You can also purchase a retail box with openSUSE 11.0 that includes 90-day installation support, physical media, and a printed Getting Started guide.

Communicate

We want to hear from you! The openSUSE Project has many channels of communication:

To keep up to date with openSUSE, be sure to keep an eye on openSUSE News and watch Planet SUSE for blog posts from the openSUSE community.

Want to help the openSUSE Project? To get involved with openSUSE see the How to Participate page on the openSUSE wiki. We can use lots of different skills to help the project, so feel free to jump in!

All of the contributors who have worked on openSUSE deserve a huge thank you. Without your hard work, this release would not have been possible. openSUSE 11.0 is the best openSUSE release yet, and will help promote the use of Linux everywhere! Now, get openSUSE 11.0 and have a lot of fun!

An openSUSE user since “SuSE 9.0″
I still remembered that I downloaded the mini “boot.iso” to install SuSE via network for 6 hours LoL
And after that I enjoyed my Linux life with SUSE LINUX
Now it’sname has been changed to “openSUSE”
But it’s still the green desktop that I feel familiar with……

These years are the hardest time for openSUSE developers
the rise of Ubuntu, the Novell-M$ Pact etc.
Yet you all still did a great job to release such a stable and powerful distro
Hope you can continue your excellent work in the future
Congratulations and long live SUSE! :-)

¡Gracias, amigos!

Downloading from the Great Tenochtitlán (a.k.a. “México”).
I think is the best distro ever. However, the artwork is too green, too bright. That’s the only thing I don’t like.
Well, the KDE4 is not too good either. It has lost a lot of options for costumization. It seems to be a “simplification” of KDE3, not an improvement.

¡Nos olemos luego!
Smell you later!

Comment by Bobby
2008-06-19 15:56:24

I agree with you pertaining to the artwork and especially the login screen. The green would be better if it was somewhat darker and not soo “green”. I hope that some creative people out there will be kind enough to make a nice theme for us.
As for KDE 4.0.x, it’s lacking a lot of features that are already being integrated in 4.1 Beta 1. The first thing I did after installing openSuse 11 was to add the KDE 4.1 repository and installed the current development version, which I find to be very stable but don’t do it if you are not fond of experimenting and if you do don’t turn on Nepomuk, which will make you system crawl like a snail :)

Opensuse’s green and bright colours: that’s why I like openSUSE, and also that’s why I like Windows XP too, they use a lot of bright colours and also a lot of white. Looking at a dark or grey screen is something that takes away my “appetite for work”. As for the KDE4 part: I agree with you, KDE3 had a lot more options which I really miss from KDE4. Hope that will change in the future with newer releases.

But anyway, thanks to the entire openSUSE team for making such a great distro!

Best advice is you need KDE 4.1 instead of 4.0 becuase the stability in 4.1 is much greater by far it can compare to 3.5.9 in terms of stability and many of the features are comming back again in 4.1 also Amarok 2 is very much useable allready if you use 4.0 then you get Error messages for the masses. “Please Contact Your System administrator” after the first time you use it. and it will pop up no matter what kde application you click on even the desktop. As for Nvidia Drivers, your card is probably supported by drivers in the repositories becuase the drivers are meant to work with all nvidia cards there is a legacy version for old cards eg. (geforce 2, 4…..)
Good Luck and Open Suse 11 is promising but ill stick with The Hardy Heron on my laptop.

I have been playing around with (open)SUSE since version 10, and I think 11.0 could possibly be the version to finally break me of the Windows XP crack habit. If only openoffice writer would fix a glaring shortcoming (for me at least) would I then be able to dump Word XP. I will give crossover office a try and see if Word runs under 11.0, and if all goes well, bye bye Windows forever!

-Lucky

p.s. openSUSE 11.0 is magically delicious

Comment by Bobby
2008-06-19 21:16:53

You can install MS-Office using Wine, you don’t have to buy CrossOVer. I have MS-Office 2003 installed (even though I hardly use it) with wine and it wors just fine. It integrates in the start menu like a native app and runs just as good with wine as it does with CrossOver. Btw, Wine has reached version 1 at last.

Comment by Lucky the Leprechaun
2008-06-20 03:50:27

I tried installing MSOffice XP using Wine 1.0RC and it wouldn’t install, so I thought I would try the Crossover Office demo and it seems to work okay (although I haven’t fully tested it). If OpenOffice Writer would only allow me to hide the top/bottom margins in Page view I might seriously make the effort to ditch Word, but this lack of feature bugs the @#$% out of me, especially on my laptop where screen real estate is limited. It might seem minor but it’s important to me. I hate to spend money for Crossover Office just to run an old version of Word XP.

Why do I have to wander between Novell sites to find what is in the boxed set?

Only the German pages are forthright in that the book is small (only 238 pages in German version; one book) and that there are two DVD: one with the software in 32 and 64 bit versions (so double layered?, double sided? what?), and the second DVD with 6 hours of videos for instructing on Linux, the console, compiling, writing Guten Tag, Welt, the Open Office and Gimp.

http://www.edv-buchversand.de/suse/product.php?cnt=product&id=sus174&sid=3b7916004c5f3ae9401e52b664b8617a

And where is the partially sighted (blind) version mentioned? It should not be released until is universally accessible from the get-go.

I wish that Michael Kofler re-issued his book “Linux : Installation Configuration, Use” for this version as a suppliment to the small 250 page pamphlet, probably full of warnings and printed copyleft scripts.

Much of the marketing pitches to people who have several ocmputers, have used Linux before, maybe want to save Windows, and don’t need hardcopy to read before playing with various options. Viewing videos on the same computer you are going to install means little to them as they want to watch a few minutes and then try it out, yet restore the entire computer back to their initial settings with a single button.

Thanks for a great job.

I am amazed of how much Opensuse has improved with the 10.3 and 11.0 releases. Suse was loosing its reputation
with the poor speed and soft management performance.

But with 10.3 starting and execution speed were vastly enhanced, and soft install revised, and I think that saved the Green One.

11.0 seems to keep on the right way.

Downloading the final release from Galicia, Northern Spain.

Congratulations for all

Hey just want to say. The new kde blows *azz. It is the worst kde ever built. And yes i have been using SuSe Linux and Kde since their creation. I want to say, to take out the basic places and functionaility of kde is the most unitelligent thing Kde could have done. Period , without a doubt. First of all, no right click for configuring desktop, only one option left now. no resolution size. YOu know what i am saying. 2nd No control panel (KDE) when i click on settings in the kmenu it brings up crappy Gnome control panel. How dumb is that? it is very very dumb. 3rd. You newbies might like the appearance and think its so cool. But when it comes to usability, it plainly is the worst *nix X windows. without a doubt. Do not try to argue. I know what i am saying. I will still use OpenSuSE, bUT It was a long time tyo wait, for the biggest dissapointment of all. Seriously the wrost *new version* with the exception of the SuSe 8 series, ever.

Period

If you knew what you were talking about, you’d know that KDE isn’t an X windows at all, its a Desktop Environment, like Gnome it runs on top of ‘X windows’ – aka Xorg or XFree86, the primary difference being that Xorg is modular whereas XFree isn’t.

What I have seen of the KDE 4 so far was a mere catastrophy in regard to usability. I don’t expect that the openSuse team elevated this crappy desktop to something great.
I won’t use openSuse until it reaches the lightness and easiness of Ubuntu. I had spent so much mony on Suse boxes. From release 5.2 to 10 I bought almost all boxes. Every time disappointed but still hoping for and expecting a better product in the next release, I have found myself installing Suse with high expectations but shortly after using Debian or Mandrake/Mandriva. There is to much overhead in Suse, e.g. SuseConfig. These scripts are just awful, totally unnecessary and time consuming.
Suse is the distro I had always fun installing and using it for some days, but then suddenly something turned out not to work as expected. Since I use Ubuntu I have no need for OpenSuse. I would not like to waste my time on it as I did in the past. I could have bought Windows over and over, regarding the money I spent on Suse boxes.

Spent money on suse boxes? The boxed version, without testing out the opensuse rc versions? And you bought all the boxes from 5.2 to 10 you say? More money then sense I see :P You are doing a good job of keeping the Novell profits high.

I don’t believe a word. if you are using Suse since 5.2 then you should’t have a problem in the world using the easiest version that they have shipped up to now.
KDE 4.0x is not the only Desktop that openSuse ships with. You can install the good old KDE 3.5x, the less usable and feature rich Gnome or the lightweight XFCE. i can’t understand all the whining about KDE 4, which is still under heavy development.
If you are happy with Ubuntu then use it but no need to come here and complain about one of the most powerful Linux distros out there.

Hi Bobby,

Most of the persons who use linux are not confined to one distro. They(sometimes) switch distros when a distro has come up with something really good in a new release. So, it is quite normal for a ubuntu user to come here and comment and he has every right to do so (as much as you have the right to say that openSUSE is the best distro).

I am personally a fan of openSUSE. But if we shoo away a Ubuntu user, we will never grow better.

I am simply overwhelmed by the disparity between all the glowing praises in this piece and the reality of one of the ugliest and most inadequate distros I have ever installed. I go back to 5.x SuSe and am always hopeful when I install newer releases. Any earlier one was better than this one. The last I installed was 10.3. I used the downloaded live CD 32 bit.

Let’s start with an almost unreadable font.My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 932GW. The driver is Nvidia and Kubuntu displays beautifully.
Then look at the installed menus. There is no application menu. Desktop configuration gives you no options that are useful and when I clicked ‘leave’ I wound up with a KDE sig error.
Then I’m faced with a wireless that is not ‘out of the box’.
The only thing the installation did decently was configure grub to include all the distros I already had on the system.

No kudos on this stinker.

I would have to agree. I too have found this distro to be a big disappointment. The yast2 GUI messed up after I rolled it back. I had to use the text version to install the default kernel and the nvidea kernel default. The install chose to install the pae kernel and that was the wrong choice for my system. The system locked up many times before I got the correct kernel installed. I do not like the gnome yast look and would like it if gnome stops trying to shove things down my throat, I still like xscreensavers better for one thing. If you are going to use gnome, I suggest you un-install all the gnome extras. I will most likely use a simple GUI like FVWM or Window maker or maybe Xfce. For now 11.0 will run in run level 3 with text mode software only… I will continue to use openSUSE v10.3 for my productivity as I feel this distro is one of the most stable and reliable Linux distros out there. Sory if that’s not what you wanted to hear, however if we are to continue to get good distros we need to be honest.

That is extremely unhelpful. Of course, it also means I have to do an upgrade instead of a clean install just to see if I find anything wrong with an upgrade (I have a new work pc on the way anyways). I’ll post IF I find any reason not to upgrade with details on why.

Let me make myself clear. I Myself will not be using openSUSE 11.0 at all. I found this distro to be of little use over 10.3 as far as productivity vs. functionality. Moreover, I believe this distro to be quite unstable. I will be doing more studies on this, but for now let’s just say 10.3 works and “If it works, don’t fix it”.

Thank you for clarifying your problems a little bit more. I am not having the same issues as your however. I am finding it to be as solid as 10.3 at the very least. Of course, I am still using XFCE instead of Gnome or KDE, but that shouldn’t cause that much difference should it?

I DO miss my all-in-one gestures from Firefox though and hope it gets updated soon for Firefox3, but that’s not OpenSuse’s fault. ;)

Good luck and I hope some patches come out to improve your experience.

Now I have to apologize to Joe. I have found it so nearly unusable for my day-to-day work that I switched to Ubuntu rather than going through all the work (again) of getting 10.3 to work. I’ll keep a watch on this distro and keep testing it, but I need to be able to work.

My dual-monitor setup DID NOT WORK after upgrading to 11.0, and a clean install to 11.0 didn’t help either. I also had issue getting my iSeries emulator to work (I still have no clue why) and an old piece of backup software we still use for our server backups wouldn’t install properly.

Like I said, I’ll keep trying OpenSUSE, but for now I am not going to be able to use it. :(

I’m using 32 bit SuSE at work and SuSE x86-64 at home since 9.3, always using KDE.
From a short visit to 11.0 Beta 1 I went back to 10.3 promptly – 11.0 Beta 1 I had called an early alpha test version unusable for all but progress in 11.0 building.
In the last weeks I’m using 11.0 RC1 with KDE3 as my main system because of its bold benefits in relation to 10.3, and beside of some minor, but boring insufficiencies (mainly KDE3!).
There was a very big progress in the direction of stability in relation to 11 Beta 1, letting 11.0 RC1 beside KDE3 being perhaps more stable than 10.3.
I didn’t try to evaluate KDE4 because of my experiencies with KDE4 in 11.0 Beta 1 – there it proved to be a valuable tool for masochists – but even KDE3 was proving as the weakest part of 11.0 RC1, somewhat less usable than in 10.3.
I think about giving Gnome a chance with 11.0.

Hola a todos de nuevo.

Hi, buddies. I can’t get neither http mirror nor torrent link to work. I already spend all the night waiting for the torrent to finish but it hasn’t even started, I tried many http mirrors form america and they don’t work either. The torrent has 606 seeds, but it download squat. I tried different download managers but i got the same problem.

And I like to add that KDE4 is a big dissapoint again. I just can’t get enough from its simpleness and pointless fancyness. I’m not a standar user, nor a skilled programmer. I like to be able to custumize the most i can, like I did with KDE3. That was the thing that make KDE special, different from GNOME, wich I like too. Not to mention the KDE4 inestability. Only the fugly Oxygen theme works ok, everything else looks messed up. Don’t even the icon themes works.

I’m willing to give it a try. However, I hope KDE3 reaches 3.6 or even better, 3.7.

I’m not bitching just for the pleasure of it. I’ll download suse 11, and I will try it. Then I’ll change its appareance like the good ‘ol 10.0, with a little of 10.1, wich in my humble opinion, are the prettier of all, specially 10.1, it has very very professional look.

Greetings from Tlalnepantla, Estado de México, where everybody downloads squat.

KDE 3 is no longer developed because development is focused to making KDE 4 more stable and have at least all the features that KDE 3 has. Hopefully this happens partly by the time of 4.1 and fully by the time of 4.2 – meeanwhile you can use 3.5.9.

Themes other than Oxygen should work. If there is any problem with them, please issue a bug report at bugs.kde.org .

Well all I can say is that I love it! Installed 11.0 with KDE 4 as a dual boot on a Vista system with fairly modern hardware. The result was a flawless install and a great looking desktop. I don’t miss the command line work since I tried Red Hat many years ago. There is a feature story in an Australian Computer Magazine headed “Ubuntu 8.04 – Windows Killer – Linux Comes of Age with a Better upgrade than Vista” Well Ubuntu missed a few of my system devices on install and couldn’t configure the network ~ openSUSE did it all right out of the box! I see that some of the more experienced users have criticisms based on years of prior use. However as a Newbie I must say that this distribution is one that Windows users could try and I am sure they will be very surprised st the result. For me this is a serious contender for replacing a Windows desktop. Thank you very much

Um, couple things…
1. During the NET Install: When you are installing via wireless and it reboots, there is nothing ‘automatic’ to bring the wireless connection back up (CTRL+ALT+F2; yast network; etc. etc. as a work-around). This is a problem as it tries to download something but cannot as there is no connection.
2. During the LiveCD Install, where the heck is the options for selecting what software I want installed??? I have limited space (home-made 4GB SSD) so I need to limit what gets installed.

This has got to be the *worst* of SUSE releases!
It’s awful. Not a thing works like it should.

I couldn’t install from the DVD… I’ve downloaded it twice, tried to install with different configurations… even tried just clicking next->next->next (default setup with no customizations)… It failed every single time!
Then.. I downloaded the LiveCD. Hurray… I’ve managed to install something.
Aahh.. f* it … I’m too disappointed to write the rest of the story…I mean, come on people… half the time ALT+TAB doesn’t work!
I thought of filling up bug report(s) crossed my mind.. but, then again, I don’t have enough time to report all the bugs… I figured 11.1 will be released by then!
After long time of being a happy SUSE user.. I’m switching to something else…
Damn, I though Vista is crap!

Guys, this would be a fine Beta release… nothing more!

Now… search for a descent KDE4 distro… how well can that end up? :S

Or install KDE 3.5.9. Btw openSUSE comes with the most polished KDE 4 today.

I also downloaded the DVD at first. The download was broken (the MD5SUM was incorrect). I tried to install but many things did not work. Then I installed with the net install CD downloading every package directly from the net and it works fine. (Currently I use KDE 3.)

People, people, people. OpenSuse is not responsible for KDE4, if they hadn’t included it in this release it would have been a PR nightmare for this distro as its new, exciting and cutting edge. I too agree KDE4 isn’t ready as a full time desktop yet as there are some niggles, but I think the team should be thanked for their work in including it for us to try out, considering the massive newbie following of this distro its unreasonable to think most users could compile KDE4 themselves. For those of you with complaints, try using KDE3.5.9 again, I am and release 11 is fantastic, it supports my hardware better (DVD drive works now, didn’t at all under previous kernels) and ACPI no longer causes random death whilst I work. A huge congrats to the improvements of package management, this is the first release since 10 where it has worked flawlessly, adding the speed it just makes it sweeter. For those of you who find bugs and can’t be bothered/don’t have the time to report them, may I suggest you pay for a commercial distro like SLED, reporting the odd bug you get in a free operating system should be the least you can do.

Congrats opensuse, I’ve been using linux for 10 years and you have done the business this time, absolutely brilliant.

I fyou have been using this 10 years, then you would see what i see. That opensuse 11 should have never been a release. All it is , as far as anyone can not see is this. it is a small series of updates, that should have been a normal standard update in 10.3. there is nothing major about this. they brag on all the bugs they fixed, yeah those should have been bug fixes for 10.3 . look at what i am saying and understand, then you will see that opensause 11 should have been just normal updates for 10.3 which they lacked to do through OPct until now. I am very dissapointed in the lack of effort to 10.3 and what they call a major release, which it is far from.

@Velocirty: You clearly miss the understanding of how these release cycles work. Please go do some homework before making your statements if you want to be taken seriously.
As for ‘a small series of updates’ ? There have been enough major rework done. Have another read through the news postings.

Anyway, if you are looking for long term, focused on stability and robustness, type of distro I suggest you go for SLED, RHEL, Ubuntu LTS or similar.

Thank you for saying it!!

Yes, KDE 4 is a brand spanking new desktop environment and yes it has a shit load of growing up to do, however, the devs at Novell and the entire open source community have invested an enormous amount of time to get things as polished as they are. Bugs and features don’t add and fix themselves, people. In fact, I’ve tested every major distribution using KDE 4.0.5 and Opensuse is the most polished of the bunch.

People, quit complaining. The devs were nice enough to include KDE 3.5.9 on the installation DVD and it contains FAR fewer issues, in fact you can even download the pattern from yast directly. A very, very, very nice Gnome desktop exists as well.

I really don’t know how you can think of Ubuntu as a toy. That distro blows away this so called upgrade from openSUSE when it comes to stability. Don’t get me wrong, I still think 10.3 is the best out there, however if you have really used Ubuntu for a long time you should know they are really on the ball. By the way ever tried Slackware? openSUSE 11 is very nice. Everything installed just fine right out of the box, except for my Nvidia driver, which I had to 1-Click install after doing search for nvidia on the “Discover It” web page. This really is the best experience I’ve had installing Linux on my computer ever! The only other problem I’ve had so far is that it tried to preserve my 10.3 stuff and I meant to blow away those partitions. So I did that and reinstalled and everything works as expected. Mine is running Gnome, everything works as expected, and I’ve install some KDE apps on it. If you click on Computer and Install Software, it’s unbelievable how much software there is. I just don’t have time to research it all. This is a great foundation to build on. Everything works very well and Mozilla did a great job on Firefox 3, I don’t have to resize text any more! I wish all the success in the world to the openSUSE team and Novell.

Congratulations to the openSUSE Team, job well done with version 11.0!

But 10.3 was also very good (except package management speed) and is too young too kill, IMHO!
The following repos are my attempt at getting the benefits of 11.0 PM improvements and keeping
a good WORKING SYSTEM:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/YaST%3a/Backport/openSUSE_10.3/
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/zypp:/Backport/openSUSE_10.3/
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/coolo/openSUSE_10.3

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/smart/openSUSE_10.3

Smart PM is my backup in case things go astray and so far all is OK. I have improved Zypper speed and an updated Yast2.
Its NOT 100% but seems to be workable and I am keeping it (also hoping the backports will be even more mature with time).

I have 11.0 installed on one machine but my laptop is working very well with 10.3 and I don’t won’t to start reconfiguring
all my settings all over again (the install is only 6-7 mths old).

I use SUSE and only SUSE since version 9.0. About 11.0, once it’s installed the os works amazing, as usual…..BUT….the “new” installer it’s extremely annoying! I usually install about 3-5 servers/routers in a month with bigger or smaller roles for a network. On an older dell pc with a 900Mhz processor, 256MB ram and slower cdrom, i needed 2 hours to finish the instalation. You are forced to boot the live cd and there is no way to select the packages to be installed and do a minimal and fast(text mode) instalation….you don’t need gnome or kde for a trivial dhcp server and/or do a DNAT, server which(most of the time) is going to droped in a corner in some GOD forgotten office and needs to be accesible via a ssh.
Is this becoming a desktop ONLY distro.?

PS: i don’t know and i don’t even wanna find out. Probably the dvd version has the old and fast text installation….but NO, i’m not going to download a big ass 4GB dvd and YES 80% of the time, the systems i install don’t have a dvd drives.

Hi Marius,
Live Cds are usually quick to install but you don’t get the choice of choosing what gets installed as the whole CD image gets copied to HDD. But you can get a text-mode option if you boot into console mode (init 3 as boot option) and call up the ‘yast2 live-installer’ (either directly or via yast/yast2—>Miscellaneous—> ysat2 live-installer option).

The following net isos are probably more what you need though:
openSUSE-11.0-NET-i386.iso openSUSE-11.0-NET-x86_64.iso

Cheers

To solve the problem that the machine does not have a DVD drive, do this: Download the DVD ISO to the hard drive. Mount it with -o loop and copy its contents to a directory on a partition that you won’t format during the installation. Download the mini net install CD and burn it. When you boot from the CD, tell the boot loader to use the directory on the hard drive in which you copied the contents of the DVD as installation source. The mini CD has the traditional installer where you can select which package to install so you can install specific packages from the DVD contents from the hard drive.

You can also install directly from the net with the net install CD and download only the packages you need – the drawback of this is that this way you download them at every installation.

If you do many installations, you may consider creating your own server installer CD with the packages you want with KIWI.

This is great, I’ve just installed it and I didn’t have any problems, the installation was smooth and thanks God no problem with radeon drivers for the RADEON integrated 200.
Usually I had to put back radeonold drivers in order to have video. I’m looking forward to put back my Oracle 10g XE database so I can keep doing tests.

LOVE IT.

Thanks for the answers Daniel and Robert.
To Robert: I’m going check out the text-mode install from init 3. Last time when i tried the net iso, i think around version 10.2, it was so basic and primitiv that it hurts. It required an internet connection….so no offline installation was possible (sometimes the connection i have to use is slow) + the slow libzypp, but i’m going to give another try to the 11.0 version.
To Daniel: Most of the time i start with fresh hdd or i delete all the existing partitions, but that “creating your own server installer CD with the packages you want with KIWI” sounds interesting. I’m going to check it out.

Thanks again for both of you.

I would like to put in my word of thanks and a big congratulations!

I’m a software developer and so far, among the major distributions, I’ve found only openSUSE providing complete up to date development facilities on the DVD (Debian provides them too but they’re not up to date), INCLUDING API documentation for GNOME and KDE.

I started with GNU/Linux using SUSE Linux OSS 10.0 and I see that most of the problems have been ironed out now, besides successive improvements to the professional structure of this distribution.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks, for this nice release!

I am a user of SuSe since version 7.1 and this appears to be the best version so far
(have been using 10.2 before which was ok except for the slooooow package management,
version 10.3 gave me just trouble, especially when it came to sound support).

Don’t bother installing KDE 4.0, however. It’s far from being useful right now, as it lacks essential functionality
(e.g. lack of multiple sessions and different fonts in Konsole, lack of customization options, etc.). I am running KDE 3.5
and it works nicely.

Well I’m stumped. I installed 11.0 on a separate partition. The install bucked a bit. It setup a user account and then it would only log in as root. Then when I re-booted it started up the install again saying it had failed. I played with it a bit and… It locks up with any desktop, i.e. GNOME, KDE, Xfce… When I use a window manager (ice, windowmaker, FVWM ect…) it runs fine. The Nvidia driver is working OK and 3D is on. I un-installed all the compiz and fusion stuff and any other thing I could think of to lighten up the load. It just keeps locking up. Must need new hardware. I’m using an Nvidia 7600 GS card and it works great in 10.3 I also run Ubuntu 8.04 and Slackware 12.1 without any major trouble. I have in the past setup fedora 8 and 9 and both work well. This is a real stinker because I really like openSUSE and really don’t want to move away from it. However if they keep putting out this type of stuff I will have to. Sorry, that’s just the way it is. I need a workstation that won’t freeze up on me when I’m in the middle of a stock exchange or writing a web page. I will try a new video card when I can afford it. The best I can guess is… New OS… New hardware…

Yes you are right. There are still bugs in suse and i’ve had trouble as well using it. They just squeezed in too many novel nifty features at a time and did not have time to test them throughly. Perhaps you would be better of sticking to 10.3 for the time being as the new things added(besides pulse audio which rocks) are not so useful in a working environment. The 11 release will improve from my experience with suse and every new major release in about 2 months when it will work flawlessly.
But one thing is sure. I for once am sticking with suse. They are the only linux distribution not to say “linux should just work” and point you to learn vim to change some file and compile from source. They just take care to deliver (at least in my opinion) the most robust and complete distro out there, the only one not bloated with propaganda, and the only one i did not feel compelled to reskin. They are the closest thing to what an os should be. Before discovering it i was doing my own distro because they all seemed like 9′th grade projects to me.

Well said, and yes I am staying with 10.3. It’s stable and works well for all I do on my computer. I did a clean install of 11.0 with the option to use the Xfce and not install any GNOME or KDE stuff. As a thin client it works very well. It’s fast and has what is needed in an enterprise environment, even some good multimedia if you install x packages only,(i.e. xine-ui). As you add packages you must be careful not to install anything that will add too much dependencies on GNOME or KDE as this will cause the compiz-fusion as well as other stuff to install, and I think that this is a big stumbling block for now. The only distro I think is stable with all the eye candy is Ubuntu. I know some people don’t like that word but I am only going by what I have experienced. I’m quite sure 11.1 will have much improvements. I remember the huge jump from 10.2 to 10.3, and even then 10.3 took a wile to smooth out, so let’s see…

Try Pardus. I had the same isues with SUSE – crappy distro, IMHO. Too much of stuff u dont need that only stalls the system. Your video is not bad, it should handle Linux easily. I installed Pardus – not so well-known as SUSE, but looks and works out of the box. Just perfect. And fonts are nice, despite the blury look in SUSE. Hope they will continue doing great job and Pardus will take the place in first 5 on DistroWatch.
Good luck

I’ve been through the Linux ringer ranging from a KNOPPIX Live CD, Red Hat Desktop Edition, SUSE Professional 8.2 and 9.2, UBUNTU (two versions), and Dreamlinux (two versions). Some would see this as gloating but in stark contrast has very negative effects on users as they search for a decent Linux distro. For a very long time trying to leverage a Linux based platform has been so much a chore that I had actually started to lose my interest in applications programming. openSUSE 11 was a laborious undertaking as several torrents and HTTP downloads fubar’d on me but I finally nailed it and it has done nothing but set me back in my seat the entire time I’ve been acclimating myself to it.

Some say it’s the best SUSE distro ever and I would have to agree but it could also be supported quite easily that openSUSE 11 is the best Linux distribution that has ever been released until now. Too many intuitive and professional grade applications like that of the seriously new and improved YaST and the networked connectivity established with the “one-click” installation service have raised the bar in the Linux realm and will soon be duplicated universally and that you can count on. The one click philos is relatively new as openSUSE is the second mainstream Linux distro, that I know of, to capitalize on the concept with great success.

I don’t know, what exactly, Novell is feeding the openSUSE dev heads but, whatever it is, it needs to be marketed and shipped world wide. There are alot of developers and so called Linux purists that could really benefit from some down to earth rumination SUSE style.

I likes y’alls cookin’

First of all, congrats for what it seems to be a good and polished distro. However :) a small glitch during install:
I have a 40gig ATA hdd for linux only, with a 10gig fat32 partition, 1gig swap and ~29gig reiser for root; when trying
to lay 11 on this configuration, it complained that the hdd is too small and proposed
to shrink the fat partition to 3.5gig :) I accepted but then it said that the root partition ends beyond the 1024 cyl. limit
(bios fault :) ) and it might not be booted directly. I finally got away with 3.5gig fat, 2gig swap, ~80meg boot and ~24gig root.
I have an ABIT IS7 mobo with P4@3gig and 2gig RAM + an 160gig sata HDD with windows on it. I’ve used SuSe 9.2, 10, 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3
previously with the same setup and didn’t encounter any problems. Well, not the end of the world though, I’m not sure what the problem
could be, but if it’s by design, I think that it should make it into release notes.

Again, thanks for the hard work and good luck!

I’ve been a fan of SUSE since it’s very early releases. I was eager to install v. 11 as an alternative to XP (Vista is dead). It installed just fine on my X386 laptop. Unfortunately, when I tried it on my X64 desktop the GRUB could not create a boot menu and I was forced to go back to v.10.3 to regain access to my system. I use a separate 34G HD for Linux and one 160G for XP. The Windows system is divided in two partitions. Any clues?

Hi there,

I have been using openSUSE 11.0 (i386) for a couple of days now. Before I have been using the 10.3 version with KDE 3.5.x. I wanted to try out KDE 4.0.x and decided for a fresh installation, not an upgrade. Backing up my data was obsolete, of course.

The installation went without difficulties and quicker than with former versions. The looks are a matter of taste for sure, but I like the new looks of the installer. :-) I knew that KDE 4.0.x has still a couple of disadvantages, you get hinted to that often enough. Still, I really like it. :-)

Yes, there are some problems. But I will not complain about them here, as I have not yet posted a bug report on them. I will try to do that soon.

Still, I can work with a KDE 4.0.x installation. I can browse the internet, read and write emails, download pictures from my digicam, edit them and publish them, listen to music, creating spreadsheets and letters, even play a little.

My parents have openSUSE 10.3 with KDE 3.5.x still installed on their computer. I wanted to try out 11.0 first myself on my computer. As they are not so “warm” with computers, I will probably upgrade their installation to an KDE 3.5.9 version of the 11.0 release, as for them the differences from 3.5 to 4.0 will still be too big (every little change is a huge change for them), but I still think, the openSUSE-team has done a very good job in making the difference not that big.

I would like to thank the openSUSE developers for their efforts. Thanks to them and to other developers people like me are able to use a lot of good applications for free. :-)

I am really curious how KDE 4 will develop in future. GNOME is also a really great desktop environment, but personally I just like KDE a little more. Xfce I have not used so much, so I cannot really judge it, but I hear a lot good about it. Isn’t it great that we users have so many choices? Maybe not for the ones who always seem to seek world domination, but I am very glad I have the choice amongst so many great free software!!!

This latest distro is a big piece of crap. Yes, I said it! Anyone who says different is talking out their a$$. It doesn’t even deserve to be called an alpha let alone a beta. Come on people, I thought Mr. Bill was the only one who tried to pull this kink of stunt (one word – Vis… cough – cough… ta). openSUSE better get it together or they WILL give Linux a bad rep. We all know Linux is a far superior OS and there are good distributions out there to prove it. openSUSE is, or rather was one of them. Let’s pray 11.1 is a different story. Man I really… — Never mind! :-( Do yourself a favor. If you like openSUSE and you have not upgraded to 11.0 Don’t! Keep using 10.x you will thank yourself, believe me. I’m not going to name names, but I can think of at least 4 new distributions out there that blow away this one. I for one think 10.3 is the best! If you’re using that, keep it! I am… If you don’t like what I say in this comment, too bad. I like to tell the truth.

Comment by Frankfurter
2008-07-05 10:38:55

There is nothing wrong about to tell the truth I think.

But what did you tell indeed? That the 11.0 release is a piece of crap and that Linux is a superior OS and that one should stay away from 11.0.

What you did NOT give us though are _any reasons orexamples_ for why 11.0 is crap. So it is your opinion and that is okay to say it, but it does neither help the developers to solve the problems nor does it help to have a serious discussion about things.

When there are problems, one should not pretend there where not, but please, name the problems and give examples, so they can be fixed and do not just say “it is carp”. First way will eventually lead to improvement, the latter just to annoyance and desinformation, though maybe to a short time of good feeling on your behalf because you “told them”. ;-)

There are many trolls out there with different motives to post their poisonous comments.

Acting like they like Linux and openSUSE, but just that Novell deal, or they like KDE, but that KDE4, or current 10.x is OK, but that 11.0, or new release is OK, but that missing feature. List can go on and on as nothing is so big as people’s imagination, in good or bad.

Frankfurter noticed lack of facts.
Not that facts are not available, but trolls expect you and me as readers to put our facts to their use, to make their (paid) job easier.

The top of hypocrisy is:

OK. Here is the list.

The GUI on gnome for yast is still not working correct. Needed to roll it back and when I did could not even get to yast. HAD to use yast in text mode. By the way that works GREAT!

The new eye candy needs a lot of work in gnome. It freezes up my system. Go away compiz and fusion DON”T need you… :-(

KDE4 is still a beta stay away from it. Stick to 3.5.9 as long as you can.

When running thin client sometime some of the security keys get corrupted.

Sometimes the default install thinks it’s OK to install on a USB drive, BAD idea…

They got one thing right. They use icewm now for the default when you startx.
However the default run level is still 5 for a thin install…Why? It’s thin…

X server is in a transitional state. Stick to one ore the other until the x.org people can get the new server conf files to work. XML rules!!!! (do we still need dtd?)

Grub does not install correctly. I used the 10.3 version. Also a more generic version would be better.

It reads the BIOS wrong and maps the drives out incorrectly.
This is a really big issue if you still use IDE as wall as SATA drives. Better remember your hd0,0 hd1,0 etc stuff… sda may not be hd0 OOOKKK Better brush up on you grub commands.

That will really mess with grub. AND just where did they put GRUB… in the MBR? Of what drive? Or maybe the root directory or did it go to the boot directory? How many licks does it take? The world may never know.

Still can’t see partitions on drive as logical drives. You still have to add them in fastabs. Easy way is to use the partitioner in yast… if you can get it to work.
IF your screen does not freeze up on you.

That better?

I’ll post more when I can remember all of them…
Stick to 10.3 or migrate to a different flavor.
My suggestions are:
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
fedora core 8 (NOT 9) Don’t even get me started… RrRrrrrrRRRrrRr
Slackware 12.1 VERY COOL !!!! (NOT for newbies)

One of the great things about any Linux distribution is that you get a chance to fix problems if they occur and bother you enough. Micro$oft, of course, holds you hostage to their applications because they are un-fixable 99% of the time and you upgrade when they tell you to at significant cost. But here we have freedom. I have also had problems with the 11.0 release involving the upgrade install on a system with software raid, system lockups on a QuadCPU X64 setup, problems with Grub not getting set correctly, and problems with “X”. Instead of complaining about this particular distro, I wish to say ‘thank you’ to those whose blood, sweat, and tears went into openSUSE 11.0 and all the prior releases. Even though 11.0 may not work the best for me at this point, it obviously is working for other folks. With all the changes in the different packages like KDE, I view this as the shape of things to come while the product is experiencing growing pains as it matures. Keep up the great work!

I have made a full Swedish remaster of openSUSE 11.0. I call it EXTON-OpSuS 11.0 LiveDVD. You can read about it HERE (if you understand Swedish).

This is a great release however I had major problems installing it. To get the system to boot I had to type ACPI=OFF or the kernel would hang during boot while loading the DVD. I also ended up having to remove beagle. System would lock up the moment beagle started or when downloading anything in firefox. It took a lot of effort to root cause. Out of frustration I tried Fedora 9 and Ubuntu Hardy Heron in the last week but they sucked so bad I decided to spend the time troubleshooting to get SuSE 11 to be stable on my system (2.4 GHz Pentium 4, Asus P4P800-E Deluxe) that had been rock solid with SuSE 10. Once I got it stable I have to say I’m very impressed. Suspend to disk works great and I like the way packages install so much faster now. Also it was very easy to add the nVidia repository, use Online Update to install the driver and then use sax2 to configure X, all in a couple of minutes after the install finished. Very slick. Nice work but watch out for Beagle. :-< Never could see why anyone ever used that anyway.

Live CD looks good. The installer = Bugs.

Partitoner just does it’s own thing and even after using the manual partioner to set mount points and mark partitions for formatting, The installer still wants to go ahead and do it’s own thing, Resizing and deleting partions without being given the OK to carry out it’s bodged guess of what the tables could be.

Come on guys, After putting all this work in, It doesn’t matter if people like what they see on the live cd. If the installer deletes or resizes partitions containing personal or other operating system data without being instructed to do so, That’s a fail in my book. Users will not use opensuse if all their data becomes deleted after an install.

The live cd install program is very important and will aid opensuse to increase it’s user base if it becomes useable again.

It’s just a shame that the live cd installer wasn’t tested enough before release. You could have picked up on this major flaw.

Good luck with the next live cd release because it is impossible to install this one on an already partitioned system.

fed up with vista I installed suse : suse 11 is not working properly: does not reconize nvidia card, firefox not working and a lot of bug with unable to read media 1 and so on!

it seems this version is still under development!

it is a petty to have such piece of s…

I hope some day we will have a usable version

Try 10.3 it is way more stable and the NVidia kernel is a one click install and compiles for you.
I’m using a core duo 2.0 Ghz and A 7600 GS and it runs smooth and fast.

I’m a user of Suse Linux since version 6.3 (I still have the box it came in). I kept using Suse all these years, for what it is… With all the goods and bads…

I can’t wait for the download to finish.
A big thanks from Greece, Thassos.

Advice: Please do not install it with kde4, but use v3.5, it is less buggy for now…

As a plain user, I was really impressed by the 3d L&F, not only vista and mac can achieve this, but also linux do, well down openSUSE team!

To openSUSE 11.0 or Not? That is the question. A wile back I downloaded two of the 11.0 versions. The live gnome CD and the DVD install disc. Well, I should have guessed that when the live disc and the install were disasters that the same thing that happened last time to me did indeed happen again. I can’t say for sure but, openSUSE seems to hold a pattern. They seem to release buggy distros at first and then fix them within two months or so. I had this same experience with 10.3. When I first installed it, it was not working right. So I went back to 10.2 for a wile before upgrading to 10.3 for good. Now its happened again. I decided to download the files again and the live CD worked much better this time. So I went for broke and installed the DVD as an upgrade to the backup copy of my 10.3. So now I have 10.3 and 11.0 on the same system. I tinkered with it for a bit and the first thing I noticed was it was not locking up anymore and yast now works the way it should, even when you change the GUI. I think that whatever was wrong with the first download has been fixed. This latest downloaded version seems to work just fine. So what can we learn from this? When you want to upgrade to the next version of openSUSE wait for about two months and when the next kernel and other updates come out, try it again. Most likely it will work out just fine. I will keep you posted on this as things progress. For now 11.0 seems to be working just fine for me. ‘Till then, happy Linixing!

No way. The first distro I ever used was Red Hat and it was great! Just cost too much for me now.

Well, I took the plunge. Now using 11.0 and so far so good. A few tweaks here and there. I miss my helix-banshee. Oh well… :-(

Well, I did it! I stepped up to the plate and upgraded to openSUSE 11.0 It seems to be working just fine. The fonts look great and everything seems to look just a bit more refined. The feel is indeed great and the package manager Yast2 is blazing fast. All the bugs that I encountered at first have been worked out. Thank you openSUSE development team for your vigilance and hard work. It’s amazing what an update of a kernel and a few other software packages can do. I did un-install the pulse audio. For my needs I just don’t use it. All the sounds seem to serve up just fine without it. The desktop effects are also something I don’t use so I leave them off too. Mplayer seems to be the multi media player of choice in this distro. It can play all the proprietary files including Windows Media Files, .AVI and .MOV as well as DVDs. Goto to http://opensuse-community.org/Multimedia to install all the so called restricted formats. I wish the big boys would realize that letting people play all those “restricted” formats on there Linux distro will in fact increase sales. Helix-Banshee was replaced by Banshee-1. It has lost the mp3 ripping option, however there’s still Grip. Make sure you have lame and twolame installed and rip away all you want. Grip is highly configurable even allowing you keep the .WAV file after words. The help files are very complete and with a bit of effort you can have Grip doing back flips. I have my wide screen LCD HDTV hooked up as a second display and it is now running in the native resolution of 1360x768_60Hz_24bit my personal preference is 2 separate X screens. Read my prior blog on how to set this up. Note, my setup is with Nvidia, ATI users will have to look elsewhere. Well, that’s it for now. As always, Happy Linuxing!

Just wanted to say I love this release of opensuse ive used suse in the past and since ive been using windows since 3.11 I didn’t like it but this time around im loving it and i plan to use and learn it. After paying 400.00 for windows vista (poop) i think a free distro is the choice for me thank you for creating such a usable OS

Although I have professionally supported/run M$ networks and software, I have toyed with suse and linux since the first versions but missed a few releases.
suse10 impressed me with the polish and ease of install on a 64 bit machine. Winxp 64 had me searching for drivers and everything but suse installed flawlessy!
v11, like all their releases, is top notch.

I am normally a KDE user but have SuSe 11 Gnome running and very well indeed. I doubt I’ll convert but it’s certainly not out of the question…it is easily the best Gnome desktop I have tried.

I also have SuSe 11 KDE4. It obviously is quite a distance away from being a stable desktop but SuSe do have a disclaimer somewhere on their download page I think, somewhere anyway, saying that KDE4 is experimental and should be for interested people and experts. Well I’m interested and will keep updating it and see how it progresses.

I have always loved Suse Linux or Open Suse however, version 11.0 made a great impression on me and worked fine on my laptop though could not get my wireless working. With Ubuntu 8.10 everything works straight out of the box without any fiddling. Windows XP professional got completely erased and unfortunately not Suse but Ubuntu is the main OS. And lets face it: Ubuntu is a great system and Mark Shuttleworth is one of the greatest among the Linux nerds. Shuttleworth is the best because he understands what is necessary to make a good distro in competition with the likes of Microsoft and Apple.

It is really a shame what has become of SuSE. It all started to fall apart beginning with 9.3. I wish we could have found out where SuSE would have ended up if left well enough alone. SuSE was never supposed to be based on Gnome, or have such tight intergration with Mono. I guess it could be argued that these things were SuSE’s destiny, as it has certainly come to pass. I understand that Novell wishes to maximize its investment in the Mono project, but it came at the cost of what used to be arguably the best of the best distributions.

I used to buy the boxed sets of new SuSE releases, but now I’ve just migrated my final machine–that had been running 8.2 for a very long time–away from SuSE. It’s a sad thing, but after 10.3 I’d had enough.

No, never to look back.

I am a long time user of Suse Linux , I use it for work and on my home computers, however the present version 11, is a bit disappointing.
I’ve got rid of 10.3 on my laptop (Dell inspiron 1525) in favor of 11.0 but I couldn’t manage to install it ! I have long experience
in istalling OS (not only linux), but no way. After all the installation process the screen is black and there is not way to repair it.
I have tried with runlevel 3, using yast2 but as soon as I try to change the graphics card/ monitor , yast2 crashes.
Could it be the selection of KDE4.0 instead of 3.5 ? It is a bit strange though, I have 10.3 with kde4 running virtual (with Parallel) on Vista, and I have no problems. I’ll wait for 11.1, and see if it is better, otherwise I have to change distribution.
