After work on the remaining show-stopper bugs we found this week, we have solved the blocker bugs, but were unable to generate all the necessary media and have it propagated to the mirrors in time for a Friday release per our release policy.

We are confident that we will be able to release on Monday, however, so please check back Monday for the release announcement. Or subscribe to the openSUSE announce mailing list (opensuse-announce+subscribe@opensuse.org) to receive the announcement as soon as the release is ready.

Just a quick note. The 11.1 release is slipping by at least one day due to a few major problems with the DVDs found during testing.

Specifically:

• The network is broken during second-stage installation
• No update repos are registered

There are some further problems with missing branding for GNOME, the slideshow and release notes don’t display, and some bugs that we hope will be ironed out shortly.

We are still aiming to release beta 4 this week, and will be providing further updates as events warrant.

While we don’t like to slip the schedule, we still consider it important to release betas in a condition that allows significant testing. If you’re interested in following openSUSE development and testing more closely, we recommend subscribing to the openSUSE Factory mailing list.

So the polls are closed now and all votes have been accounted for and confirmed valid, and we are now proud to announce the election results! The openSUSE project would like to welcome the first community elected board, and would like to thank all voters for taking the time to use their vote.

The new board members are, from the Non-Novell side of the community Pascal Bleser and Bryen Yunashko and from the Novell side we have Henne Vogelsang and Federico Mena-Quintero. We are proud to announce that Michael Löffler has been appointed by Novell as chairman of the new board. Being the candidates with the most votes in their category, Pascal and Henne already agreed to serve the board for the next two years. Bryen and Federico have been elected for one next year, hence the next election will take place about the same time next year.

The election committee would like to congratulate them on their election and wish them all the best in steering our fine community and project. We would also like to thank all of the candidates for their interest in serving on the board, and we’re proud to have so many excellent candidates to choose from for the board.

A total of 75.11% (178 of 237) voters participated in the poll. Voters had the option of casting two votes for each category, for a possible total of 356 votes per category for the election. Some voters, however, choose not to use both of their votes for each category.

The final count does not convey how close the election was in some parts, but it does show that the openSUSE community is committed to ensuring that they take a stake in their own project and that the understand that to make the project prosper they need to be active.

The election committee wants to thank the first openSUSE Board, Marcus ‘darix’ Rückert and Joe ‘Zonker’ Brockmeier for their ongoing support. In addition to this we want to thank again all openSUSE members for their participation.

The openSUSE Project is proud to announce the availability of beta 3 of the 11.1 release. It’s a few days late, but much better for the delay. Beta 3 is now available for immediate download and testing.

As mentioned on news.opensuse.org, this release was delayed significantly by the power outage in Nuremberg over the weekend of October 11th.

Important: Call for Testing
We all want openSUSE 11.1 to be the best release yet, and we need your help to get there. This release is ready for widespread testing, and we’re encouraging everyone to download and test the beta release. Please run the release through your usual routine, and let us know about any bugs or other issues that you find. Remember that this is a beta release, and is not suitable for use on production systems, however.

What’s changed since beta 2?
Major changes in this release include:

• Live CDs for x86 and GNOME and KDE
• OpenOffice.org 3.0
• Mono 2.0 Final
• Linux 2.6.27.1 (fixes e1000e issue)
• CUPS 1.3.9
• Parts of 11.1 branding are now in place
• Amarok 2.0 beta 2
• Banshee 1.3.2
• GNOME 2.24

Installing openSUSE 11.1 beta 3 on Mac OS X machines should work fine.  Previous openSUSE releases would not write the partition table correctly to the MBR, but it should now be possible to install openSUSE on Macs more easily.

KVM is broken in this release due to a kernel configuration change before beta 3. It should be working in the next release.

OpenOffice.org 3.0 integration continues and should be much better in this release. The most annoying bugs with missing icons, broken dialogs, Java registration, and others should be fixed. However, a few bugs remain, and new ones have been reported. Current issues include:

• KDE and GNOME integration is ignored (bnc#433076)
• GNOME quickstarter does not work (bnc#434778)
• localized strings are not updated from extra sources
• optional packages are not really optional because the registry files are not spread correctly
• the user configuration includes symlinks to /usr/share/ooo3 instead of that real files; it might be a feature but it might also cause problems in the future.
• pyuno components are still not registered
• Suse-puzzler.xls works only partly; e.h. “Sneaky Peak” or “About” works but the “Shuffle” does nohing. Also, pieces can’t be moved by mouse.
• some missing hacks from ooo-build/bin/package-ooo and older OOo.spec
• missing OOo-sdk compat stuff (to build voiko…, bnc#428403)
