Quickies: openSUSE 10.3 RC 2 Live-CDs, SUSE Linux 10.0 Soon Discontinued, And More

September 26th, 2007 by

Stephan Kulow has announced openSUSE 10.3 Live CDs based on Release Candidate 2 which also got synced out – its live installer should still be considered Alpha. The security support for SUSE Linux 10.0 will be discontinued soon, after over two years. The openSUSE Codecs Site went online which will provide openSUSE 10.3 users with hints when they try to play unsupported formats. There is a nice user report about Novell’s presence at the recent OpenOffice.org conference. Marcus Meissner did some observations on how fragmentation can affect package manager speed and added a support database article. Responding to a distribution survey, Pascal Bleser created some statistics about the amount of packages for openSUSE. Counselors paper-writer.org paper writer can work in a variety of settings, from schools to rehabilitation facilities

    Re openSUSE 10.3 Live CDs
I downloaded the Kde version of RC2 to check and see if dispaly issues related to new “intel” driver and 915GM board were fixed.
Booted without any issues but the default display is still ColorDepth 16 instead of 24, and only one frequency mode listed in xorg.conf.
Running Sax2 corrects this but I think it should be detected by default.

I found that the sound card does not get configured by default in the “linux” account but does in the root one. Also, the function keys for volume up, down and mute do not work in the default account (or on newly created account) but they work fine in the root one. Hardware is Acer 1644 wlmi Notebook.

Works fine on my old IBM-Thinkpad, what still is missing:
    Checkpoint Secure client…

I wonder if it would hurt to put the script from the package management fragmentation SDB article in cron.weekly or something like that. It really improves speed and costs only a few minutes of cron running.

this is RC2 and sadly on the 1CD(gnome) version the smpppd package is still not present(need for DSL connection)
this package it’s not big and on the CD there is space for it
please try to put this package in the final release

Even in RC2 NTFS read-write support is not as good as its in Ubuntu… even after installing NTFS-3g and NTFS fuse.. not able to get read-write access to NTFS partition. This should be made more automatic, especailly for newbie in linux like me.

Does anyone know if a 10.3RC1 can be updated to 10.3 or is a new installation necessary.
Best would be if all dif. stuff would come over patches / yast.

    • Beineri

You will be able to update but there will be no package patches/online update. An update will have to redownload all packages completely. If you want to save bandwidth you will be able to pull the ISO deltas, apply them and start “Update” when booting from the created release ISOs.

I downloaded RC2 live to verify the eclipse installation *doesnt run in RC1. But I found eclipse also defective in RC2 and I couldn’t install any software from repositories – dependencys were broken on nearly every package…

    • Martin

Correction: I had to install java 6, eclipse didn`t work with the automatically installed gjc. And dependencys are broken for nearly every package, if I activate the pattern “java” instead of installing every single package of java.
And the community repositories cannot be found, the list of repositories is missing. Perhaps only a feature of this live cd?

    Hi Guys.
Have one question here. Will I be able to install RC2 on my hard disk from this Live CD ? Or it is only for Live use ?

    • Martin

Yes, there is an icon on the desktop to call the installer. See my comments above – this installer is not perfect. I tested it on a virtual machine *vmware server 1.04. So I didn`t care about partitioning and formatting hard disc – be careful if your disc contains any other os you want to keep…

Too bad this Live CD didn’t work on my computer, although it worked on my older one. The reason is propably the SATA dvd drive on the newer one. Other people have also had the same problem on their SATA drives.

When I boot the computer with the live disc, it first loads the kernel and then it says about this:

    Loading Kiwi…
    Failed to detect CD drive!
    Rebooting in 60 seconds”

But got to say that this 10.3 looks beautiful! :)

  10. Does the 10.3 has a newer FreeRadius, with included “Vista Support” ?
I need to install a new system, and if 10.3 still have the old 1.1.3 .. :(

    • Ok, solved :) In the liveCD of 10.3 you have FreeRadius 1.1.6 and this is ok for EAP-TLS and the M$Vista Bug. Merci.
