Mesa, Kernel, Wireshark update in Tumbleweed Snapshots

January 11th, 2017 by

There were plenty of Tumbleweed snapshots leading up to the holiday season and openSUSE’s rolling release is gliding into 2017 with several new packages on the horizon.

The last snapshot of 2016, 20161226, updated the Linux Kernel to 4.9, which was a good way to end the year. Several packages were updated in the snapshot including Python3-setuptools to version 31.0.0, gnome-online-accounts 3.22.3, NetworkManager 1.4.4 and yast2-network 3.2.17.

NetworkManager changed the order in which IP addresses are configured is now preserved so that primary address is selected correctly.  Yast2-network enabled DHCP_HOSTNAME listbox only when wicked service is used.

The biggest update in the first 2017 snapshot, 20170104, was the several KDE Plasma 5.8.5 packages that were updated. Samba updated to version 4.5.3 and fixed CVE-2016-2123.

Mozilla Thunderbird’s update to version 45.6 fixed a couple security and memory bugs.

The library offering an Application Programming Interface to access secure communication protocols called GnuTLS updated to version 3.5.7, fixed several bugs and set limits on the maximum number of alerts handled.

Also in the snapshot, Wireshark fixed User Interface bugs with an update to version 2.2.3, newbie-friendly text-editor nano updated to 2.7.3 and libvirt-python added new APIs and constants with the update to 2.5.0.

The 20170109 snapshot provided a cleaned up configuration settings for Mesa, so it can be uniform across all architectures except for list of Direct Rendering Infrastructure and Gallium drivers. Btrfsprogs 4.9 clean up was well and offers better handling of file system snapshots. Python3-setuptools updated to 32.3.1, which is fixed regressions and compatibility  issues from previous versions.

New Leap Beta Adds Plasma 5.8 Beta

September 22nd, 2016 by

iconThe release of openSUSE Leap 42.2 Beta 2 today added several new minor versions including KDE’s first Long Term Support version for Plasma.

The highly anticipated release of Plasma 5.8 LTS will be the default desktop for openSUSE Leap 42.2 and its beta (5.7.95), which was just released last week, is in openSUSE’s newest beta release.

“The quality of the distribution at this point looks quite good,” said Ludwig Nussel, Leap’s release manager. “Since Plasma 5.8 is still a beta version, it deserves more attention and thorough testing. We can help upstream to release a good 5.8.0 and get a decent quality default desktop in return.”

KDE and openSUSE slightly adjusted release schedules to be able to include Plasma 5.8 in the release of openSUSE Leap 42.2 because Plasma 5.8 is an LTS and complement one another as well as appeal to conservative adapters. (more…)

Tumbleweed gets three snapshots, Leap deadline approaches

August 10th, 2016 by

Tumbleweed-black-greenSince the release of Linux Kernel 4.7 in the 20160730 snapshot, which brought lengthy email discussions about out-of-tree and third-party drivers on the Factory mailing list, openSUSE Tumbleweed produced three snapshots.

Snapshot 20160803 made a small update to the repositories for Mozilla Thunderbird and k3b. The snapshot updated libzypp to version 16.2.1, gnome-online-accounts to 3.20.3 and obs-service-source_validator. In 20160803, virt-viewer had the most changes.

Snapshot 20160805 brought more package changes and one major uninstall. LXDM was dropped from openSUSE Tumbleweed and uninstalled in this snapshot. LightDM is being used in the environment instead and is auto-installed with a change configuration for those who are using LXDM. This snapshot provided several repository updates, and NetworkManager-gnome, Libreoffice 5.2.0.4 and WireShark 2.0.5 were a few of the many changes found is 20160805.

The most recent snapshot, 20160806, updated Inkscape, which provides more extensions. Wayland-protocols updated to a new upstream release of 1.5 and btrfsprogs has new options to run in the background with version 4.7.

Tumbleweed users will likely get Plasma 5.72 in the next snapshot, which should be released soon.

openSUSE Leap

In two weeks is the submission deadline to get packages in the next version of openSUSE Leap 42.2. The Beta 1 is scheduled for release at the end of this month, according to the roadmap.

The current development version, Alpha 3, needs more people to test the version and file bugs. Download Alpha 3 and test it out at software.opensuse.org.
